Corsair CMPSU-850TX/HX/AX

Post by harpocratos » Fri Sep 02, 2011 9:19 am

okay, so which one should i buy, they are 80 PLUS simple/Silver/Gold, 140/140/120 fans, nonmodu/modu/modu
i need the most silent one, on this site i found only 850AX tests, will TX/HX have the same noise lvl?
and what about 750AX
because from PSU calculator if i ever going to OC my rig, it recommends me 430 W PSU, so is 850 too many, 650 maybe ok, or even 500? (enermax pro87+)

What are the rest of your componenets? Are you planning to OC?

That build should run fine with much less than 750/850W, i would probably go with Seasonic 560W 80 Plus Gold ATX 12V/EPS 12V Power Supply - X-560 SS-560KM, out of being cheapest of the Seasonic X series and the fan wont turn on unless it needed. But on P183 (or in my past build antec 1200) i really like the Antec CP-850, its very nice PSU for that case, specially for the price, while fan is always on, its very quiet, and will give you room to grow for any future single cards might come, and probably SLI and OCing. Personally i really like the looks of the following build, Boring but silent, in there you can see the CP-850 + P183. Really good reviews all over the net about the CP 850, here some if you wish to read more,

SPCR Antec CP-850: Unique PSU with Top Performance
HardwareSecrets Antec CP-850 Power Supply Review
JonnyGuru Reviews - Antec CP-850 850W

Btw the Corsair AX series is really good, if you want to go with them should be great also, i just find the CP 850 + P183 a cheaper and good combo.

Good luck with your choice,

i got only one last question - p183+cp-850 is designed for each other, and PSU has fan at it's back
but other PSUs come with fan on the bottom, and given the p183 configuration for PSU placement, how will that PSU perform, should it placed fan to the bottom or up? does it affects cooling

ps. what about Enermax Modu/Pro87+ 500, will it be enough for me?

Really depends on each case and setup, usually bottom mounted were installed with the fan facing up out of past cases didnt had any holes or clearance on the bottom to breath, newer cases do have holes and even fan filters, now using a PSU like Corair AX or Seasonic X, they will be partially passive until the fan needs to be used, for this reason i would still mount it up so hot air can raise up from the PSU, but this is just a personal preference. I still prefer the vertical mounted 120mm fan on the CP 850, its a great PSU, i have own it for couple of years now, and to anyone buying a 1200 or P183 that would be my recommendation.

Probably, but personally on a gaming rig that you will OC on the future, i prefer to have some room for upgrades like new gpus, or multiple gpu setups, etc.

That's my thinking as well. My system runs fine on a 400W PSU at the moment, but I need another and want to get something that will be OK if I ever go Crossfire, get a more hungry CPU, etc. I was thinking of a 650W, but this CP-850 looks amazingly quiet and isn't badly priced at around £99 either. I've got no need for a modular unit, but there doesn't appear to be anything non-modular that compares.

I don't have a compatible case, but I'm going to build a custom case with the PSU in a separate chamber anyway, so it's ideal, particularly with it's long cables. :)

Just to report I've got the Antec CP-850 now and it's as quiet as I'd hoped.

After fitting my Accelero Xtreme Plus II to my 6950, all I could hear was my Samsung F4, my OCZ StealthStream 400W and my Nexus 120mm CPU fan at 1060RPM (in that order). Now I've taken the PSU out of the equation and with the HD disconnected and the Nexus slowed to 600RPM I can't hear anything :D
