ENERMAX Platimax 600W EPM600AWT

Fan is 600 RPM at idle and 1500RPM max not bad but definitely not 0 RPM at idle like some of the newer high efficiency PSUs. It is however a magnetic ball bearing design that should be reasonably quiet for a 140mm fan. PSU fan runs for 30-60 seconds after shut down to dissipate the remaining system heat and prolong system lifetime. 7 blade fan with struts facing the "wrong way" so it will have some noise from the 4 struts. I would have hoped for lower RPM fan on the 600W model.

What makes this special considering the fan isn't up to SPCR best?

Full modular cables PSU with 89-94% efficiency @20-100% load. Compliant with 80 PLUS Platinum standard.

Also ErP Lot 6 2010 ready. Advanced +5Vsb circuitry with up to 20% improved efficiency in comparison with generic designs helps your system meet ErP Lot 6 2010 (AC < 1W at standby) requirement. (requires ErP lot 6 compliant motherboard to achieve this).

The 600W version is what I'd be interested in but the only review so far is for the 1200W version. http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/09/ ... ply_review

Expect the 600W version to be between $150-$200 US. Good for a gamer/higher power home server but not necessarily better than getting a quieter 80Plus Gold unit from Seasonic, a Platinum from Kingwin/Superflower or other competitors. Really only worth looking into if you plan to run multiple video cards or if the price drops down the road.

I'd hope, with platinum levels of efficiency, the waste power/heat would be low enough that even a mediocre cooling design can be quiet.

This isn't just platinum levels, it exceeds 80 Plus Platinum levels of efficiency. Gotta wonder with something that efficient why it isn't fanless, using a fan controller than can stop the fan, or at the least running a lower RPM fan.

I wandered around the enermax website and found the download page for the 750W specs/user manual here. Halfway down the datasheet (includes 500W-850W models), it shows the fan profile: ~350rpm up to 40% load or so, then ramps to 1000 rpm at 100%.
