This is the first post of a long time lurker from Portugal, so much knowledge around that reading was enough till now .

I'm planning to upgrade my HD4830 and use the accelero S1 Rev.2 in my new GPU, but I have a few questions:

-Is the Accelero S1 Rev.2 + Turbo modulo or NF-S12B ULN enough to cool HD6850/HD6870? and if I do some OC?
-In the "old" AC site was some info about the need of VR001 for HD6850/HD6870, there is good alternative to this kit?
-I had the idea that HD5870 was in the list of compatibility in AC site, but isn't there anymore, someone in AC messed with the info (same for info about VR001 in HD6850/6870) or is my mind playing tricks with me?

I recently tried the S1 on my 6950, with a 120mm 800RPM fan attached. In games it kept the card quite cool, under 70C. But in Furmark it was questionable and one of the GPU Temp readouts broke 100C.

The 6800 line is a smaller, cooler die and the S1 should have no problem with it as long as you use a fan.

5870 would probably be questionable because it has similar power demands as a 6950.

Hi, S1 cools 6850 perfectly. If you don't do OC or Furmark it may work completely passively (but adding a fan helps a lot). I would advice to get 2 Scythe Jyu fans, those 100mm in diameter. They are little harder to install (need to use zipties), but they are much better and quieter then Turbo module. Get 2000 rpm versions, because the ones with 1000 rpm are still silent at maximum. To give you an idea of the performance, my card reached max 48C degrees while playing Bulletstorm for couple hours. (Case is FT02, but case fans were really slow).

I used the VRM001 heatsinks, but you can use anything that fits and cools VRM's properly. I believe, you could install S1 on 5870 too. Basically, you can install it on everything as long as it fits. I have seen people installing it on 5770, which is much smaller and it required cutting fins, but it worked perfectly.

Yeah if you want dual fans then 90-100mm fans are best because they will both fit over the cooler. Two 120mms don't fit, but using just one 120mm is pretty good as well.

It's worth trying to go fanless but watch your temps closely. The VRMs may very well overheat too without active cooling. I've fanlessly cooled both a 3870 and a 8800GT. You have to have some air movement in your case though.

I really like Accelero S1 rev.2, just to go safe and cool I zip tied a low RPM noctua in my HD4830, even if I know it's not needed, even if my case have good airflow, I prefer to use a slow fan and see the low temps in my setup.

I guess if an Accelero S1 can cool a HD6950 a HD6850 would be no challenge (even with OC).
If I get the HD6850 probably I'll get some zalman VRM heatsinks to put in VRM's and try to zip tie 2 low RPM 120mm Noctuas I have, probably not an easy task, but I saw it in one of the forum posts a HD6950 with 2 120mm fans, it can be done.

Funny thing is I just traded a second S1 Rev2 + turbo module for an AMD Athlon 3500 + Original HD4830 cooler, couldn't resist the bargain , I'll install it in my father 6800XT

I tried 2x120mm fans on an S1. It is ok but part of each fan hangs off of each side so some airflow is wasted. A single, centered 120mm performs pretty much the same. I think the best setup might be 2x100mm because combined they should fit over the sink. Otherwise 2x92mm would be nice too.

One useful tweak to the S1 is to remove the cheesy plastic cover on the base. It prevents air from directly hitting the heatpipes right there at the base. You will probably improve temps slightly without it. You just need to unscrew the mounting mechanism from the base and then slide it off.

There is a very cheap alternative to the VR001 kit for the 6870 keep the metal baseplate from your stock cooler, and use it to cool your RAM and VRMs. Apparently it cools significantly better than small RAM + VRM heatsinks you can add . I am not sure if it works well on the other cards, but I know that for the (reference design) 6870, it fits and works well. Also, for best temperatures, take it off to clean all the thermal pad junk and any components it touched, and replace it with a good thermal compound.

Has anyone ever tested the difference of 1x 120mm fan vs 2x 92mm/100mm fans? I am very curious about this .

I've had several cards cooled by S1 - an excellent cooler, best price/performance ratio in the market I'd say. But you know that already

For fan setup I'd go for 2 smaller fans, at v low speed, mainly to keep the card's VRM as cool as possible. Cooling the GPU and RAM is no challenge, but it'd be a good a idea to provide some airflow for the power section. Lots of heat there. Lots. Sure, these chips can go well over 100 C and be OK, but still, keeping them cool is both safer and saves energy (cooler chips - better efficiency).

Yes, do not forget the VRMs.

Ended up getting a 6850 myself, specifically a Sapphire hd6850 1GB toxic for 1/3 of the original price. The cooler however isn't quiet enough, but I had a AC S1 rev B lying around since I last used 4770. Toxic also isn't cool enough, so here's my chance to use the AC S1 once again.

Luckily the toxic had a good base for VRM/MEM cooling, so I left it there after certain trouble, the fan on the Toxic was really difficult to remove.

With a fan at 700rpm (Scythe) I have a full load of about 55C, down from 77-80C with the loud 2000rpm Toxic cooler. VRM temps are also lower.

As seen on the picture the AC S1 has been a bit butchered, this was because it wouldn't fit a short 4770 otherwise.

And you, sir, should be done the same that you did to the poor AC S1, trying to fit it on 4770. All you had to do was to trim a dozen fins, cutting them off a little before the heatpipe that's closest to the I/O bracket. There was really no need to maul the poor cooler in such a ghastly way. But alas, tis too late.


For a while I also wanted to slap the AC S1 on my 5850 when the original fan simply broke down (bearings gone to hell), but I got, by some strange coincidence, a cooler from the 5830 version. I briefly hoped I would simply replace the fan, but the 5830 fan is larger than the one in 5850, so I had to transplant the whole HSF. Also, the 5830 cooler is bigger, too - 3 heatpises vs 2 heatpipes on 5850. Anyway, both fans idle at < 1100, which is quiet enough for me those days, and ramp up to at least 2000 when loaded. Temps are quite OK, with 40 C in idle and around 70 when gaming. I'm sure the S1 would be a much better solution but I'm quite happy with the system as it is. Just my 2 c

I think the fins were a bit too close to the I/O bracked and I didn't have a dremel so that had to do. Looks do not matter, I just can't place two fans on it, that's really the only difference. 2000rpm would drive me nuts. Below 800rpm is mostly good, but they need to be softmounted too.

Three months ago i couldn't pass a DirectCU 6870 for 159€ , for now I can live with the stock cooler, not silent but quiet enough for me, at idle the fan spins at 1350rpms, in games (Crysis 2) the fan rises to 1650rpm with less then 80º, thats better then the DirectCU 6850.

I've made some arrangements in my Antec 300, I had the feeling that the some hot air from the GPU was trapped between the graphic and the PSU, I swapped my side panels again, and putted there the Noctua NF-S12B ULN extracting the hot air.

For now I'm happy with the noise level and the jump in performance from the old second hand HD4830 .

I just had to enter my box in the general gallery because of this tread, I got a semipassive HD 5850 running in a P180. Gonna move to TJ-08E soon though.
