Seasonic X-850 Coil Whine - Should I RMA?

Post by Oubadah » Sat Sep 10, 2011 3:07 am

I finally found a whine free GTX 580, all I needed was a quiet PSU. I went for the X-850 but...

Freaking squealing driving me insane. Even scrolling I can hear it, but not as loud as the above examples. Those are CPU and GPU load.

I thought this was a quality unit...

Anyway, I need to know whether I'm likely to find a quiet one (RMA), or should I just sell it and try an Antec Signature or something. How many other X-850 owners have whine?

Hi,
I didn't had X-850, but I changed two seasonic x-660 both with a annoying coil noise confirmed by the retailer, I tested both on 3 different systems and on all they had coil noise so it wasn't induced by other hardware.
Its your choice if you want to try another seasonic, depends on how lucky you feel :).
Lately more and more hardware components come with coil noise :(.
Good luck getting a coil noise free PSU.

Just make sure you're running from a grounded socket. If you already are, RMA or send it back to where you bought it. An X-850 is also way quite overkill for a single GTX 580, and high power PSU's running at low loads might be more prone to this.
