I'm going next week in Singapore, so I thought I'd pick up one of the Intel 320's (80Gb probably). Does anyone know computer stores that sells Intel SSDs in Singapore?
Thx!

Sorry if it's offtopic...
All you have to do to make it on topic is tell us the price you can get it in Croatia vs the price you see in Singapore when you go. Good luck on finding a deal.

Well, here in Croatia Intel 320 80Gb SSD sells for about 163€ (~243$).
I don't know yet prices in Singapore, so I've been searching for computers stores where I can look-up prices online, before I go :)

So, if anyone knows computer store with prices on the web site, I'd appreciate it :)

It's questionable if the 40GB Intel 320 Series should be on the list. The 40GB X25-V is starting to go out of stock as it is an EOL item. I'll be either dropping one or both of the 40GB drives off my list in the near future.

M4/C400 prices are now accurate as these are in stock in several stores.

The selection at 120/128GB is wide and the X-25M prices have risen noticeably recently so that it is no longer the cheapest drive at that capacity. Intel 320 Series 120GB is looking to be the value drive in that capacity.

At 160GB the X25-M dropped in price but the Intel 320 Series 160GB drive is dropping in price ahead of it.

For whatever reason the 512GB and 600GB drives got more expensive in the last few weeks.

value drives short list:

Code: Select all

Samsung 470 64GB ~$110 ~$1.72/GB MZ-5PA064/US

Some drives dropped in price some drives rose in price. No clear trend as disasters economic and otherwise leave uncertainty in the market.

Dunno about singapore but I can't help but suggest you look at 64GB drives or 120/128GB drives as the 80GB price point isn't a good value here in the US.

As it seems, the prices are almost the same in Singapore as they are in Croatia...

Intel 320 series 80gb drive ~260 SGD
Intel 320 series 120gb drive ~315 SGD

The Intel 510 series stands out like a sore thumb. No reason to consider it a value drive, it's just here to document the odd pricing.

Crucial M4 is setting the pace for pricing.

Samsung 830 is the newcomer with no pricing info yet.

X25-M 120GB still hanging in dollar for dollar with it's replacement Intel 320 and the segment leader Crucial M4.

I have some egg on my face for predicting that the Intel 320 with 25nm flash would result in major price drops after the initial honeymoon period. Look at the 300GB model, a monstrous 1.8% price drop in 5 months.

The Vertex 3 has emerged as a value buy but I have no idea if the early reliability concerns have been addressed. I am still buying G2 Intels as I have a 100% perfect record with them so far.

For older PCs with 1.5 GB/s SATA the X-25M and 320 series are fine. Reliable and will saturate the old bus.

For slightly newer PC with 3.0 GB/s SATA they are still great for the XP holdouts.

For Win 7 users the Crucial/Micron M4 seems like the place to be to me.

aka using a Sandforce based SSD? I don't think an average user would notice a big performance bump over C300/m4 and then you have the potential bug issues.

Are you talking about this "issue"?

However, I could agree about the users' potential unawareness of the higher "performance": I myself am not able to notice a huge difference between the Intel X-25M 160Gb and a 5400 rpm 120Gb Toshiba drive (the laptop I'm working on)... but I think it's fully OT here.

Yep.

I don't want to put words in dhanson's mouth, but I think the intent of this thread is to show pricing trends amongst the drives he'd be willing to buy....and the factors are primarily reliability, price at a given size, and performance. I think most of the current gen products pass the bar for general purpose performance and only power apps users will see a difference. So, you are left with price and reliability.

With some competitors like the Corsair Force 3/GT, price and reliability are still points in favour of the best Marvel-based units? I have some more doubts than before.

That was the last review I read before posting the pricing update.

I read that review page for page and was shocked when they still recommended Sandforce drives with as little reservations as they did.

If I ever saw a sandforce drive even half as reliable as the X-25M Gen 2 I'd happily through it into the mix of drives I consider reliable. There was a period this year I came close to making that call but then the BSOD errors got worse and got more attention. I'm not going to put a drive in a PC that could cost me money in lost business from a client or get me fired by a boss with no willingness to forgive others mistakes. All it'd take is one drive showing an issue like that and my name would be mud.

Now if you want to tackle issues with the M4 and say it is unreliable I'm listening, but so far the worst I heard about them was the usual backup your data before doing a firmware update drama that bites the careless. Not great but not enough for me to wipe them off the list. Especially since they are the dominant price leader everyone else is following and they recently released a firmware that dramatically improved performance for non server use.

And yes, CA_Steve was right. The thread title implies that any SSD I bother to track is fast enough that I don't consider the speed differences my primary concern in choosing between these drives. In order of importance (which might change every time you ask me) I'll say today that the order is:

* Form factor / compatibility (not usually an issue but with mSATA, PCIe, and other odd SSDs you do occasionally have to think about it)
* OS support (Intel Toolbox being the pinnacle, best possible support)
* Reliability (the Intel controller based drives top this, followed by Marvell based drives, though I don't know where Samsung fits they might jump in this mix)
* Absolute cost (not cost divided by capacity, just the plain simple cost of the drive)
* Capacity & Performance (not divided by either, just that performance varies by capacity within series so my pick at 64GB might be a loser at 120/128 GB and there might be a 3rd different winner at 256GB. I'm not worried about capacity as even a 40GB drive is perfectly usable as a boot drive but price wise the 32GB and 40GB drives have dropped off the list because 64GB drives beat the snot out of them in both price/GB and performance. I could go on and on about Capacity or Performance not being important but lets go to the next factor
* Power consumption (it's a rare SSD that scares me on power consumption as they all tend to blow away the 3.5" hard drives in the average consumers PC (think 7200 RPM WD/Seagate))

I don't seriously consider putting any drive in my PC that costs over $100, but I consider more expensive drives where capacity or other people's use come into play.

This is not the thread where you argue about the fastest SSD or the one that is best for gaming. It doesn't matter if 30 different websites say that a drive not on my list is the best SSD ever made.

This is the thread where you discuss the best budget SSD or if there is such a thing as a budget SSD. It's the thread were you discuss price changes in general and might mention that if you plan to use them in PC x for use y that drive z is a good choice because it's cheaper than another but still good enough that you won't have buyers remorse.

You are more than willing to say you like a drive that I don't list but at least say you think its worth x% more dollars or compare two real world prices while saying it's a better drive than the one you don't like. Join in, say what you want, but just like the game show jeopardy asks you to answer in the form of a question I'm asking you to post in this thread in the form of "is it really worth the cost difference?" or "how much more is it worth than," and so on.

But then it is only a request. You don't have to do what I say.

Intel SSD 320 Rebates - Prices Under $1/GB

The $1/GB price point for SSDs is held by many as the tipping point for SSD adoption on a mass scale. Well for a few days anyway, Intel is offering $80 rebates on their 60GB and 120GB 320 SSDs, taking prices to $80 for the 80GB capacity and $110 for the 120GB capacity. Intel is offering a $130 rebate on the 160GB capacity. The offer is good for purchases today through the 28th.

The SSD 320 (Intel SSD 320 Review) does wonders for legacy machines who are still using the SATA 3Gb/s interface, and at these prices, you can pick up two and put them in RAID0 (Intel SSD 320 RAID0 Review) where they do very well.

The rebate is for purchases made through Amazon.com:

* 80GB Intel SSD 320 - $79.99
* 120GB Intel SSD 320 - $109.99
* 160GB Intel SSD 320 - $144.99

At the moment Amazon has only the 80 GB left. Price after rebate: $69.95.
Newegg has the Intel 320 120GB for $119.99 after mail-in rebate.

US only :( :( :(
