Fanless 550Ti?

Post by M7S » Mon Nov 28, 2011 5:49 am

Is there any way to run any 550Ti cards fanless? Artic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev. 2 seems to support 550Ti but says you need the turbo fan accessory to keep it cold enough. http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/detail?sArticle=24.%3F
Is there any other heatsink that fits 550Ti cards that would be enough to run it fanless?

If fanless isn't possible I guess I could settle for some solution where the fan is inaudible during normal use an only ramp up during gaming.

All suggestions are appreciated. Amd/ati is not an option (I'm using linux).

The highest Nvidia GPU that can run fanless (given that you have good airflow inside the case), is the Sparkle GTS450. I'm not too sure if you could the 550Ti, i think by now, we would have seen a manufacturer release a version of it.

If the GTS450 isnt good enough, you probably could go with aftermarket cooling like the one you suggested (manufacter has the 550 on their support info) and temps arent to your liking strap a very low rpm fan like Slipstream 500/800rpm.

Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't seen that card anywhere around here (Finland) and I think I read somewhere about some regressions with opengl for the 400 series when using linux drivers.

I've never used an aftermarket heatsink for a Video card since I only used budget cards before so I have no clue how easy or hard these things are to install and how cearfully you need to choose your card and heatsink to get them to fit together.

For example is it possible to fit a Thermalright HR-03 Plus onto a 550Ti even if it is made for the 8800 series or will the screwholes be in totally wrong places? That heatsink looks nice if it would fit.

I bought a msi 550Ti Cylone II and if I find that it is too loud I will get the accelero and a slip stream 500 rpm as suggested. Thanks for your help.

I've got a 450GTS Fanless from (Asus 1GB Nvidia Geforce GTS 450 Directcu Silent) however it uses slower DDR3 ram, if you look at the power pull for a DDR5 550Ti, its well over 100 watts.

Probably too much for passive and I've not seen one DDR3 based 550 on the market.

I would say:

Zotac GT240 passive (hope they are still available)

Asus 1GB Nvidia Geforce GTS 450 Directcu Silent PCI-E Graphics Card (available in the UK)

(They dont use a PCI-E power connector)
