Hi, I am giving my little sister my old pc but the stock cpu cooler is pretty noise.

The motherboard is Asrock G31M-S micro atx, and the case is a no-name miditower.

She is going to play on it as well, so the CPU is going to be stressed :)

I'm not looking for the very best cooler, just one that is way more quiet than the stock one, can handle gaming, isn't too big for the case and too expensive.

Thank you :)

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus $21 free shipping would be a very cheap solution, crosscheck if your sisters case has a 160mm height clearance for the cooler height, else a Cooler Master GeminII S $33 free shipping could be an option still not that expensive.

Hi, E8400 isn't a very hot chip so if space limited a 92mm fan cooler should do the job.
If the Hyper 212 is too big look at the Hyper TX3, or Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 or Freezer 13.
Regards, Seb

Btw, add a rear case fan can help CPU cooling especially if you use side-blowing towers....

The 92mm Noctua is small and can handle much more heat than your e8400 will ever generate.

It is capable of handling overclocked quad core cpus. Here is how an older version with just a single fan performs:

It is only 125mm high
http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=prod ... g=en&set=1
And it is pretty much compatible with any mothboard. They even list the boards for which they have tested its compatability:

Noctua also has a policy of providing new CPU mounts for free as new chip sizes. Just remember to keep your receipts as proof of purchase.

You could also consider a Scythe Katana 3. Cheap, very nice fan, easy mounting system, well-suited for mid-end CPU's.

For an ultra cheap solution, check out all the fans from the Arctic Cooling Alpine. AC clearly states that these do NOT offer additional thermal performance according to stock heatsinks, but noisewise they are miles ahead. SPCR have reviewed some of these.
