Silverstone ST45SF (SFX size) or ST50F-P (ATX Size)?

Post by clark42 » Wed Jan 04, 2012 6:41 am

Hello,

I need suggestion for my silent mini-ITX build and I'm torn between 2 PSU.

What is more silent between a Silverstone ST45SF (SFX size) or a ST50F-P (ATX Size)?

Both are rated form Silverstone a minimum of 18 dBa but should the bigger 12mm fan be a better for noise quality compared to the smaller 80mm fan?

Anyone have experience?

Thanks

The ST45SF is not silent.

Too bad SPCR did not test it but that's what I imagined. I need somthing that could not be heard at low loads.

Best choice for silent seems Nexsus NX-500 only 12cm deep but has not modular cables and they are very long by default.

Enermax Modu87+ 500W 80Plus Gold is 16cm deep but has modular cables so even if bigger maybe would be better for case airflow.

Even the Seaonic X-650 seems a good option as the fan seems not to even start at low loads but I don't know if would be ok in a hot small case.

I'll continue my search, any comment on those PSU is apprecieted.

Thanks!

If you are looking between 450 and 550W, if you have good airflow maybe a fanless psu like Seasonic SS-460FL $115 or if you want with a fan, Seasonic SS-560KM $135.

Actually it's a Lian Li PC-Q11, very small aluminium case with only one front 14mm fan invent.
I guess that a sort of fan at least under load to cool the PSU should make it more reliable.

Thanks!

I see you mentioned the new Seasonic X-560 / X660

I only considered PSU reviewed by SPCR

do you know have if it features the great noise performance of the older review here?

Well its the same line, they should behave similar, persnally i own a X 660 and i dont have any issues, passive at idle, very quiet at load, i think all the series would be a good pick just a matter of chosing the right wattage for you, that said, even the SPCR reviewed X400, some people experience buzzing sound, check X-400 buzz noise, or even the one you are considering, Seasonic X-650 - buzzing, still i went x400 and x660, both working perfect for me, i think its more the combination of hardware or bad luck, regardless seems a very low amount on the user reviews experiencing, so i think its low the chance, but its best to know it can happen before you commit.
