Radeon 7770 and 7750 reviews out

They make noise, too.

Radeon 7770 and 7750 reviews out

Post by boost » Wed Feb 15, 2012 1:32 am

HT4U, Hardwarecanucks, Anandtech, Pic of Saphire 7750 fanless @ Dailytech, Computerbase, Computerbase' Saphire Radeon 7770 Pics, XFX Radeon 7770 Jet Black OC @ Hardwarehaven (dual fan cooler)
7770: 159$ same performance as 5830/6790, idle/game/furmark power 10/75/95W, stock cooler ok looking forward to cards from MSI, Gigabyte and Asus with better coolers
7750: 109$ same performance as 550 TI maybe a little less, idle/game/furmark power 6/40/52W. stock cooler even quieter than 7770 (only ht4u's review, other reviewers say it's really bad but should come to market like this, just bios foulup?), passive cooling should be easy!
No real improvement on price/performance ratio compared to older cards, but improved heat and acoustics.

I'm extremely, extremely interested in the Sapphire 7750 Ultimate (fanless), which doesn't seem to be out yet. Has anyone seen this for sale anywhere? Newegg doesn't seem to be listing them yet.

HD 7770 seems to be a nice card. With Accelero S1 PLUS it should run well in passive.
I also don't mind that the 7770 has slightly lower performace than 6850 but it would be nice if 7770 wouldn't be more expencive than 6850..

The 7750 seems to become quite a popular choice considerings its performance compared to its power draw (power from PCIe slot is enough). The pricing also seems ok. That cannot be said about the 7770. I hope AMD has price cuts in the works.

So, the 7770 is intro'd at $159. I figure pricing will move once Nvidia's parts release. Probably down to around $129.

The stock 6850 intro'd at $179. Then, aftermarket cooling versions came out at ~$199. Now, you can get the MSI Cyclone version for $150. Yeah, you get 10% higher fps for $9 less. But, it's 8W more at idle, 30W more gaming, and 20W more with 2 monitors.

Honestly, I'm looking forward to the mid-grade 7850/7870 cards for 1920x1080 gaming.

Nice noise results for the Asus DirectCU 7770 at techpowerup.

So last night I ordered the HIS 7750 from Newegg, opting for that instead of a 7770 due to the easier wiring in my cramped HTPC and the HIS 7750 comes with a highly-rated Arcticooler that should be sufficiently quiet if I drop the fan speed a bit. Given that I'm currently playing my games with the HD3000 in my 2500K, the performance should still be nice and at $110 it won't break my heart if Kepler looks a bunch better and I want something faster in a year. I'll report back how I like it after it arrives.

Does anyone know if the Radeon 7750 can be run in a system with a Pico-PSU?

I'm thinking of putting it a http://www.logicsupply.com/products/c292 with a Sandy Bridge itx system.

The PicoPSU that I have now is the 120-WI with a 120w FSP Block

It's iffy. I think you'd be right on the edge of max power. PC Perspective's test system had an 82% PSU, i5-2500K, and the 7750. 80W AC idle, 121W AC with one gaming benchmark. You might need to underclock/undervolt your gpu and cpu a bit just for some margin.

What CPU? It should be just possible. Its maximum power draw through the PCIe slot is 75W, and I can't find its exact actual peak draw quickly but I wouldn't want to assume it's lower than that. That plus a 35W SNB, motherboard, and SSD should just sneak under the limit, especially if you can undervolt the CPU a bit and don't ever run Furmark. Gaming should give you some headroom most of the time, since the card isn't at max power draw 100% of the time under gaming. What are you intending to do with this system?

I wouldn't try it with a 2500K, but if he can get by with an 2100T or possibly even a regular 2100 that should be a bunch lower (35W TDP, maybe 40W realistically for the regular) than a 2500K (95W TDP) and the pico should be better than 82%. It'll be tight, and I wouldn't try it without expecting some tuning work and being ready for the build to fail, but it would be a neat build if it works.

According to the first post in the thread, the 7750 draws only 40W in normal game use and 52W in Furmark. With some planning, it seems very doable. >20W under your worst case assumption.

You're right; I missed that when I was looking for tested maximum power draw. It does sound doable, though I'd still be more confident about 35W CPUs or the slower 65W-rated ones.

The CPU that I currently have is the G620 and the motherboard the ASUS P8H61-I http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 0h61%20itx

What about the required amps on the +12V rail? How much does the motherboard/cpu and graphics card need?
If the 120W PicoPSU that I currently have won't run it, perhaps the 160XT would get it done.

If I ever built the system in question, it would be an m-ITX gaming experiment

My HIS 7750 arrived today. Nice and quiet, but I'm having a hell of a time getting the driver installed - Windows gave me a "failed to start" error message when it first came on after adding the card, then the driver on the CD wouldn't install since it wasn't signed, then the downloaded one wouldn't work, and now their driver tool is download the 12.2-precertified version which will, hopefully, install. I'm getting frustrated.

Bummer, dude. The take away message is:

When installing a new video card, always download the driver from the AMD/Nvidia site after looking to make sure it's the version for the card. Never use the CD. :) Driver updates are fast and furious the first few months of a new card release.

I uninstall the old drivers with the old card in place. Using driver sweeper to clear the remaining stuff out. Then, I'll swap old card for new...and then install the downloaded driver.

It's been a long time since I actually used a discrete card, and I had hoped the CD drivers would get me going, given how recently the cards came out. The 12.2 gave me an error message about a .inf file missing (which I had gotten with the second set as well). Just uninstalled everything, cold boot, trying again.

If you still have problems, try using driver sweeper to clean out the stuff left behind after uninstall. Also, don't use Windows new hardware detection to install the driver. Escape out of that and then install the catalyst stuff on your own and reboot.

Thanks, but something has gone wrong - nothing will make the drivers install, and Windows can't even manage to run its repair feature. Reinstalling tomorrow.

You can boot from the Win 7 CD and run repair from there.

That didn't work; it claimed it was the wrong version for this install of Windows (despite being the CD I had installed from, and I certainly didn't upgrade versions to cause it. I just reinstalled Windows, taking much less time than I spent arguing with it last night, and it worked fine this time. For those wondering, with the fan speed set to 50%, FurMark is sitting at 74*C, and the fan is audible but low and pleasant, and only audible because nothing else in the apartment is on right now. It's running 5-8x faster than the HD3000 in my 2500K.

Also, the fan was barely clipped to the heatsink on mine. It was easy to just push down and make sure all the clips were engaged on the lips at the edge of the heatsink, but it was sloppy.

Passivly cooled Sapphire HD7750 Ultimate Edition Review @ Kitguru. No suprises, performance is the same as standard card, the cooler keeps the card cool even in Furmark and the price will be little higher than the standard card.

single slot version is out: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814131461
anyone interested if this can be run on a 120W PicoPSU?

Other hardware: ASUS H61 itx, Pentium G620, two DDR3 DIMMS, SSD

I might consider getting this just to try it out

I have just got the Sapphire HD7750 (not the Ultimate) and the performance is 7% lower than the HD5770 that it has replaced, but the consumption is fantastic! It consumes over 45w less than before in games (average) which is a massive 45% reduction in power consuption.

I can still play Crysis, BF3 and Metro2033 on high settings @ 1680x1050, but the performance is not fantastic when compared to the HD7770 or HD6850.

I am running the fan at 20% idle and 30% load, and the card is almost inaudible at 30% and only reaches 66c with Furrmark and prime95 running.

I am very chuffed, though I feel I will be replacing the basic alu heatsink before long as it gets far too hot using only the 220mm casefan blowing on it. That scuppered my plans for a 2 fan set-up, where the only fans would be the 220mm case fan and 120mm PSU fan.

I have the asus 7750.

Great card for my needs, but i'm thinking an accelero plus is in order, not so much for the noise, which is minimal, but morse for better cooling.

What idle temps are you guys getting on your 7750?

I replaced the Asus stock cooler on mine with an Accelero L2 Plus and I'm hovering at 40 degrees idle. in a TJ-08e.

I remember the idle temps on the stock asus were around 35-37.

I've only been measuring temps for an hour, so could still drop once the TIM sets, but I thought it would be lower straight off.

Thanks!

BTW. the L2 PLus is dead silent

EDIT: the 7750 does NOT need the spacers. With the spacers, the heatsink does not make proper contact withthe GPU. I removed the spacers, and temprs are down to 33 Idle.

My 5770 died and I am quite interested in buying a 777777770. I would to also like to take my aftermarket cooler over to the 7770, a Thermalright HR 03 rev. A. Can anyone verify the the mounting holes, heatsink compatibility etc. on any of the 7770 models.

Also, is there a way to use RAM heatsinks or will I need to buy more?

TIA!

Vonbosch: have you considered any of the aftermarket coolers from Arctic Cooling? They also make passive coolers.

Well I did a couple of years ago, but then I bought the Thermalright HR-03 rev. A. The nice thing is that this cooler can be mounted 'in reverse' with the heatsink fins on the back of the card. And with this I have one straight airflow from my graphics card, through my CPU heatsink and exhausted up out the top of my case.

I would really like to keep this system as it works really nicely (quietly!) so I am really looking for a card to which I can fit my HR-03 rev. That way I don't need to rethink my airflow or spend extra money on another VGA heatsink.

Umm... bump? Has anyone had experience fitting coolers to both the 5770 and the 7770? For example are the PCBs of reference designs the same size?

I know I will basically just have to suck it and see, but I am trying to decide which model to go for and so far it will basically just be a crap shoot...
