SilverStone LC16M HDD dampening

Post by schrackin » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:44 am

Hi folks,

I bought a SilverStone LC16M HTPC case, and my 2TB Samsung 5400rpm hdd is very loud.

How could i eliminate this noise?

I assume the noise is caused mostly by vibrations from the HDD into the chassis... because Samsung Eco drives are generally pretty quiet otherwise. If you just have the one drive, you could put it in a Novibes drive suspension cage and mount it in the bay beneath your OD. If that's not feasible, then suspend it sideways with elastic cord in one of the HDD cages. With some creativity, each of those HDD bays could probably hold 2 vertically suspended drives. This kind of mechanical decoupling will eliminate most HDD noise; seek noise, especially, should drop dramatically and the constant hum you get from a higher vibration drive will pretty much disappear.

Search in SPCR main site and forums for elastic suspension. Umpteen references.
