Have you used speedfan or some other method of reducing its speed to 700 RPM?

You chose a bad fan. At 2500RPM, any 12 CM fan sounds like a plane engine, and PWM will only let it drop to 700 RPM, too much for true silence.

Download speefan, start it, press f1 and read the "how to configure" part and you should be able to bring the speed to minimum (700 RPM).

Also, if it's an asus board, there is fan control software for it (Fan Xpert).

Next time chose a fan with a maximum of 1000-1300 RPM

Try two Noctua NF-B9s. Run them at a straight 1000rpm. They will be quiet and will generate more than enough cooling for your needs.

well i installed the speedfan and configured it with great success, thank you so much. i found the happy place where i just started to hear the sound and set it there 35-50% case runs cool so i havent seen it above 30% or 700 rpm's yet @36c. i was also able to set the fans to temp thresholds 40-77c for cpu and 40-60c for the case which was gr8 as well. set my cpu cooler up while i was there and was able to drop that to 14% 750 rpm's while holding 40c normally it would run around 1200 rpm's i assume by default because the temps didnt change much. case is quiet as ever, thanks again

Just drag the shortcut to the startup folder in start menu.

\SpeedFan\speedfan.exe /NOSMBSCAN /NOSMARTSCAN

You can add the variables in the shortcut so it doesn't bother the harddrives and the SMB for nothing.

Hi, sometimes under Windows Vista or 7 you can get the UAC prompt come up when Speedfan is launched from "Start Up" group short cut.
An easy way round this is to create a Scheduled Task to start it at log on. Just follow the wizard and afterwards go in to properties and tick the "run with highest privileges" option, should then load without the UAC prompt. Well it does on my PC anyway!

Regards, Seb

dropping it in the start up folder didnt work, i tried the task scheduler and after windows logged the fans did slow down but for only 10 seconds. any further advice would be greatly appreciated.

You have the shortcut in the startup folder - http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/7650/32296166.jpg

Right click it, properties, check "run as administrator" - http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/9372/94979912.jpg

If it doesn't work, disable UAC. Hit the start button, go to the search window and type "uac" - http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/6995/98381209.jpg

Start UAC and set it to "Never notify me..."

Easy!
