PSU for new Ivy Bridge 3570K

Post by karkee » Mon May 07, 2012 7:10 am

Since Ivy bridge came out I am going to assemble a new desktop for gaming.

So far I bought I5 3570K, Asus P8Z77 Pro. Probably going to use a new Radeon 7870 or something.

I was thinking of using a Antec Solo 2 case or the corsair 550. ( any suggestions here im open for any!)

Any suggestions for a silent PSU? I was thinking about the Seasonic X 1050w\1000W Platinum one? or should I go for something diffrent? X760 ?
Maybi kingwin? Doubt I will find it in Belgium/europe.

Seasonic 560W 80 Plus Gold ATX 12V/EPS 12V Power Supply - X-560 SS-560KM - should handle any dedicated GPU fine, it should be passive on idle and still very quiet at load, i have a X400 on my HTPCMI build facing up, and a X660 on my MICROMI build also facing up, i think its a good choice for the Antec Solo II.

Definitely only need around 560W. X-560 is great choice.

Yes, in this era of more power efficient CPUs like IVB and the latest die-shrink GPUs like the 7870 there really is no need to buy anything more than the X-560. Not even if you overclock the 3570K.

Hi, I would say 1kw PSU is about 3x too much!
I've run my PC, i7-2600k @ 4.5GHz + GTX560Ti from a Seasonic S12II-330w PSU. My estimate is it draws ~280w DC, and at least 50w less run at stock speed. Ivybridge also uses less power than Sandybridge and your proposed Radeon 7870 is similar to my GTX560 Ti in power usage.

How about using Seasonic X400 or X460 fanless PSU? In Solo II can mount it with vent up so heat free to rise out of PSU and case and I doubt you'll push it beyond 250w DC load anyway.

Unless you over-clock the CPU a lot and go for a bigger video card, or two. In which case even a Seasonic X-560 will be enough power. In silent mode the fan won't run at low loads and should be quiet even under high load.

Enermax have a new, expensive 80+ platinum range, Platimax. In 500, 600, 750 and up to 1500w. Discussed here. The 500w has a reduced cable count so I might pick the 600w version as it's barely any more money, round here anyway.

Regards, Seb

Thanks for the input guys.

I was looking for a real quiet PSU, I saw on silentpcreview they recommend the Super Flower SF-550P14PE.

At first I thought I couldnt order this one in EU but apperntly I can.

So now I am looking to order one of these:

Super Flower SF-550P14PE

Seasonic x-660

What do you guys think I should go with?

The components I will be using :

I5 3570K

8gb of gskill ram

For the GPU I might go a 7950/7970

Samsung 830 SSD

Is a 550W going to be enough?

Thanks.

550W should be more than enough for that setup, you probably looking in the figures below 400W for fully stressed setup, but idk if you going to OC hard. If it gives you peace of mind go with the X-660, thats what im running atm and its a great PSU, but when i bought mine was the same price as the 560, today its like $40 difference, its up to you if its worth it or not. The sunflower should be fine also, personally i prefer seasonic but thats a personal opinion, the sunflower is platinum cert... but to me its all down to the price, i feel the X560 offers a lot for $125.

I am not going to OC, I guess I could go with the seasonic.

Just wanted to be sure the flower isnt gonna run more quiet then the seasonic, I guess it won't make much of a diffrence.

The SF-550P14PE isn't the one SPCR recommended. I wouldn't pay $125 for that.

In general I don't see the point in buying any expensive (overpriced) Seasonic PSU. But that's just a personal opinion I guess...
What's not a personal opinion is that expensive Kingwin/Superflower make the best PSUs. But not necessarily the best in a given price range...

I don't know how much power your gfx will need but most gamers don't need >400W PSUs. The best PSUs can give more power but if you want to save money you'll get better value with ~400W than ~600W PSUs.

If you want total silence, the highest passive PSU i seen is the KINGWIN STR-500 500W ATX 12V v2.2, EPS 12V v2.91 and SSI EPS 12V v2.92 SLI Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Modular Active PFC Stryker Fanless Power Supply, also reviewed in SPCR and awarded the Editors Choice, Fanless PSUs: Kingwin Stryker STR-500 & Silverstone ST50NF, has a single 12v rail rated at 41A so it should be fine powering your 7950/7970. Also reviewed by HardOCP, Kingwin Stryker STR500 Power Supply Review in case you want to read more.

Im interested in your opinion into why you think so low of seasonic and so high of kingwin.

The SF-550P14PE (http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?na ... t&reid=221) is the EU version of Kingwin LZW-550 Platinum ?
Atleast I thought so?

Otherwise I can get the Seasonic Platinum 860 or 1000 ( I know its alot more watt then I need but I am limited to what the store has to offer)

Also I can get the Seasonic x 760 and the Super Flower Golden King 550W (that I thought was the eu version of the kingwin LZW-550, unless im wrong here?!)

The Golden King is obviously a Gold-rated PSU. It's inferior to the LZP-550W which is more expensive. That doesn't make it a bad PSU. Even a second-rate Kingwin/Superflower is way better than most PSUs.

Oops! I was in a hurry and the Gold-rated Superflowers in the EU are called Golden whatever so I assumed this was a second-rate model as well. Confusing marketing again! I've looked at the jonnyguru page and if it says it's a Platinum, it's a Platinum and definitely worth $125.
Sorry about the confusion. I'll try to look stuff up carefully before posting next time...
