Points per week relative to CPU differences

Post by Zyzzyx » Sun Nov 23, 2003 11:06 am

Alright, I'm gonna have to start keeping track of what WUs my two home systems are getting, see if there's any duplication across the two.

Why? Maybe its been (bad) luck of the draw, but my AMD 1600 (1.4Ghz) has generally been around 120-150 PPW. While my AMD 1700 (1.46Ghz) has been around 400-500 PPW.

I'm really thinking its been just the WUs that my 1600 had been getting. I can't see a 60Mhz speed difference causing that much drop. And I didn't think there was speed differences between the Palomino and TBred chips.

Hrrmph...

Well, what I'm going to say is by no means definite but I think if you get Tinkers your PPW drops by a factor of 1.5 - 2.0. Add the pecularities of the scheduling algorithm to that and you've got your slower machine getting Tinkers all week and sucking bad.

If you want to check the "artificial" performance of your machines, download SiSoft Sandra and run the CPU and MM tests. If there isn't a big difference then it is probably what I've described above.

<OT>I'm getting close to my first 1,000 points. Woohoo!!!!</OT>

Weird deal for sure.

I have one 1400 T'bird that is really slow on production - just the total # of wu's completed. For a couple of weeks, I had a 2000 Palamino folding and it seemed to be a slow producer. I changed the cpu to a 2700 T'bred and it's blasting along now - using the Zalman 7000/alcu at about 1,500 rpm (Fanmate) and it's great!

Just anecdotal comments.

ColdFlame:

I haven't seen a Tinker WU in weeks. All Gromacs recently. I will pull down a benchmark program and compare the two systems though.

I would like to replace the 1600 Palomino with a T'Bred though. My 1700 T'Bred runs 40-45C with an SLK800 and 6v L1A, without undervolting (1.53vcore). The 1600 with similar setup (7v L1a though) runs 48-50C, undervolted (1.63vcore). I'm sure if I can get another 1700 and undervolt it, oughta run nice and cool.

Why not Barton 2500? Cheap and cool.

I'm waiting till Barton 2800 or 3000 drops to $100 and upgrade then.

Why not the Barton? Because I don't think it will run on my KT7A motherboard. And I can get a 1700 for about half the price. Well, if I can find 'em. Newegg at least doesn't list below the 1900 anymore. Last I saw the 1700 there it was $43 or so.

Moot point right now anyway, next computer money is going to my wallmount system for new psu and cdrw.
