Corsair 550D I5 3570K Asus GTX670

Post by karkee » Thu Jun 28, 2012 5:17 am

Hello,

Today all my parts came in besides the fans/CPU cooler. I would want some advice on what fans to use and what options I have. Im open for all though I really like noise blocker fans.

So heres my config:

I5 3570K
2X4GB Gskil DDR3 1600
Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe
Asus Direct CU GTX670 (non top version)
Seasonic Platinum 860

I want to keep the rig as silent as possible with decent temps (trying to to go above 60° under full load prime)

So if anyone can recommend me what fan setup I could use that would be great! Especially if someone has ideas with the noise blocker ones. For the CPU cooler I think I'm gonna buy the Noctua NH u12p SE2, the NH-D14 is to large for my liking since I won't be over clocking.

Holy cow, that's a large PSU :D I'd start with the stock positive pressure fan configuration (2 front intake and 1 rear exhaust) and see what you get after tweaking with Fan Xpert. You can always buy more/replace fans.

Yea I know the PSU is overkill but I got a really sweet price :)

I just removed all corsair fans. I for sure wanna go with the noise blocker multi frame ones, I have one here (750RPM model) and it just sound so nice.

I was thinking of one for exhaust and 1 for intake both the 750 RPM model, for the CPU fan I don't know yet.

Comparing your system to the SPCR review of the case, the GPU TDP is comparable, your CPU is considerably less. So, it might work with 2 fans. Here's an alternative: add a Corsair fan to the front and bottom and use Fan Xpert to keep them off until gaming (ie: much higher temps than any other use). You won't hear them over the GPU.

Also recognize that Ivy Ridge runs hotter than previous generations due to smaller die area and the not-so-inspired thermal interface.

Well I tried a 1000RPM fan on the CPU with the case open, max load is 50°. Ivy doesn't run hotter if you don't OC?

Given your choice of motherboard, using a fixed rpm fan makes no sense. You should be using PWM fans with fan xpert2; that way the fans are quiet at idle and can ramp up as necessary under load. From my experience, the Scythe 120mm PWM mid speed fan here works very well with such an arrangement: http://www.scythe-eu.com/en/products/fa ... 0-pwm.html. If you don't might more noise (and it appears that you don't since you indicate that you find 750rpm quiet), then there is even a more powerful PWM fan: http://www.scythe-eu.com/en/products/fa ... h-rpm.html. If you are fixated on noiseblocker brand fans then they have some PWM fans as well: http://www.noiseblocker.de/Datenblaette ... _de_en.pdf.

Well I used a noiseblocker 3 pin 750 RPM for the exhaust and intake, and on the mobo case fan channels it also spins down because it supports PWM on 3pin?

No PWM but I believe fan xpert2 supports voltage control on 3pin fans so you are getting a similar effect on the CPU fan in that the voltage is adjusted downward at idle and upward upon load. The problem is that you are limited to 750rpm at max while a good PWM fan like the Scythe will idle at an inaudible 400rpm and ramp up to up to 1,300 rpm if necessary upon load.
