Hi all,
Just curious if anyone knows... why does the sandy bridge and ivy bridge processors take 5-10 additional watts on idle than Windows? Is ESXi not going into some low power idle state? Is there drivers for ESXi to improve this?

I think if you use hardware virtualization it not gonna be any difference with usual operation system at idle state.

ESXi doesn't spindown hard disks.
However it has power management features for CPU.

Actually spindown of hard disk is worst way to save energy, cause this dramatically reduce lifetime of hard disk.
