Silent[ish] NAS

Post by scorp » Sun Oct 07, 2012 10:19 pm

I just wanted to report that I got a Synology DS413 and out of the box it was way too noisy for me. Fortunately, editing the scemd.xml config fixed that in an easy way ( I set the fans to run at 7% until the HDD reaches 40C - the default profile had the fans running at a minimum of 23% ) and the noisiest thing is now the single WD20EARS. The temperatures are also quite ok, the system stays at max. 37C for the system and I haven't see more than 33C for the drive ( even after copying stuff on it for hours ).

Sounds good, glad to see manufacturers providing the option, even if it is through manual labour.

I'd like to add my personal experience with regard to performance (any NAS i encountered with more than 2 bays would not make it to spcr):

Good: QNap, Thecus, Synologie
Nearly as good: Netgear

Every NAS is personally encountered from different brands had either performance problems or badly designed admin interfaces, most of the cheap ones had both.

Unfortunatly the named products don't reside on the cheap end of NAS prices.
