Thermalright HR-01 Plus Passive for i5 3570k?
My current Gigabyte Motherboard has died so I've finally gone ahead with an upgrade from my core2duo system.
I've gone for an Asrock Z77 Extreme Plus4 & an Intel i5 3570k.
Now the Asrock seemingly has mounting support for LGA 775 coolers meaning I should be able to reuse my HR-01 Plus.
My question is, will it be enough seeing as I'm not using a fan currently?
I believe the TDP is about 10 Watts more for the i5 and I don't plan on overclocking much if at all.
This is all housed in an Antec P182 with the standard case fans on low. I don't really hear it as is, and don't mind adding a fan or two into the mix as long as it doesn't get audibly louder.
I don't mind changing coolers as long it stays virtually silent.
While I think about it, seeing as I'm going to be gutting the system anyway, I really should get a fan on the front to help cool my raid array. Any recommendations?

If you've already got the standard Antec TriCool fans on low (~870RPM IIRC?), then you'd be nuts to leave the CPU heatsink fanless. Adding a quiet 120mm fan to it wouldn't make a pinch of difference to the overall noise level. At the very least, make a cardboard duct going from the heatsink to the top or rear fan.
As for case fans, consider the old Nexus Real Silent, or Scythe Slipstream PWM, or Scythe Gentle Typhoon 800RPM. Make sure you pick up some of these delightfully soft and gooey silicone fan mounts, as well as one of these splitters if you'll be using PWM fans.

Nuts to have been going this far passively, or nuts to attempt it on the i5?
I've been looking at the recommended fans and the noiseblockers seem to have a lot of love, or do you think it's hype? Eg I've seen as many posts around saying the gt's are over rated as those from people who swear by them.
I was thinking of keeping it simple and getting two of those. One for the cpu, one for the hdd intake.
Would I need a pwm splitter?

Yes, a PWM fan on the CPU cooler running at low speed at idle would make sense. Usually it would be better to pair it with a PWM exhaust fan. So you could consider moving the existing exhaust fan to the intake position where it can run at a lowish speed just to keep HD temperatures in check. In terms of fans, the Scythe adjustable PWM fan SY1225SL12HPVC costs around £10 from sources such as QuietPC. The adjustable feature should give a greater control over idle speeds than most motherboards allow, typically at the lowest setting around 400 rpm.psych wrote:I was thinking of keeping it simple and getting two of those. For a two fan PWM chain of CPU plus exhaust a simple PWM Y cable costing about £3 such as this one will be OK.psych wrote:Would I need a pwm splitter?

I have an HR-01 passive on a QX9650 at stock speeds in a P182. Case fans are 1200rpm Slipstreams in the front and bottom, and 800 rpm slipstreams top and rear. It works fine. (I have from time to time overclocked it at which time I use a Noctua NF12P.)
Should handle an i5 without too much trouble

Re: Thermalright HR-01 Plus Passive for i5 3570k?
Wow! Just seen that the Max TDP on that is 130W. how toasty does it get with passive cooling?
Re: Thermalright HR-01 Plus Passive for i5 3570k?
It usually runs on the low to mid 40's C under normal use. Under heavy load it might climb to 55. I've tried gaming with it passive and it climbed to 60-70's mark so If I'm going to play a game I use a fan.
Right at this moment I have it OC'ed to 3.6GHz with an NF12P and the fan speed is showing 320rpm and the CPU temp is showing 36C. Ambient is about 21C.

Well, I've now found that whilst the Extreme4 has mounting holes for 775 coolers,
it isn't going to take the HR-01 Plus & the backplate.
Instead it looks like I'll need a 1755 Bolt Through Kit.
It looks like the venomous one will be fine, but I can't find anyone who stocks them in the UK.

Have tried searching on ebay as well, and can't find diddly.
Have tried emailing Thermalright but haven't heard back yet. Anyone have any ideas?

Frozen CPU in the USA have the Thermalright Venomous BTK Bolt-Thru kit in stock at $15 US (about £9.40) and will ship to the UK. It is a fairly small light item and should not attract any customs duty. The Frozen CPU shipping calculator suggests USPS First Class International (15-30 days) would cost another $15 US, so probably around £19 in all.
Re: Thermalright HR-01 Plus Passive for i5 3570k?
Yeah, Frozencpu seem to be the only US retailer I could find that would ship to the UK,
although £20 for the mounting kit seems a bit much.
I think I'm going to have to get a CPU Fan so there gos another £10 ish.
For £40 I could just get the HR-02 Macho though...
