SeaSonic G Series SSR-550? Other mid-range options?

Post by illusice » Mon Nov 19, 2012 8:50 pm

I'm looking for a midrange ($50-$100) quiet p/s. I loved the Antec Truepower 550W (which died after 7 years of continuous service) and thought the Antec Neo Eco 620C (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817371030) was a bit too noisy. I'm sure anything on the recommended list is more than quiet enough for me, but the Seasonic X-650 is at $140 and Antec Truepower New TP750 at $110. I'd spring for those if people tell me it's like light and day, but otherwise, I'd like to explore some of the more budget-friendly options. I mainly care about being quiet under light load (I don't care so much when my games are blaring away). Modular is a plus, but it's not necessary.

For $60, SeaSonic G Series SSR-550RM 550W

Does anyone know how loud this is? I'm really having trouble finding info on this.

I see good things said here about the S12 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817151096), but that's more expensive AND seems like a step down (bronze instead of gold, not modular).

The Corsair Builder Series CX600 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817139028) is actually $30 w/ promo code right now, but the consensus here seems to be that CX and TX are bad.

Since it will probably get asked, this p/s will be for my new rig, which I plan to finish up in the next 2 weeks or so (mainly waiting for my hook-up for the processor):
Intel Core i7-3770 Ivy Bridge
Asus P8Z77-V LE
8GB DDR3 RAM
Old Geforce 8800GTS to be upgraded to something better later (like GTX 300/400/500)
Old HDs (5):
- 2 x 1TB Samsung F3
- 2 x 2TB WD Caviar Green
- 1 x 2TB (Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm fossil I think?)
Fractal R4 Case

Thanks if you read all that :)

Seems I missed a review because I searched Google for SSR-550, and that's not the universal name for it:
http://www.kitguru.net/components/power ... y-review/6

Based on the measured noise and comparing it to the measured noise on other power supplies this site has reviewed, this sounds like a very quiet power supply that only starts to get noisy at the high end. It's not on the same level as the X series, but I think it's good enough. I went ahead and bought it, and I'll let you know in a few weeks if it at least passes my not-so-exacting standards.

The G series is very good, the 360W model was already reviewed by SPCR.

You probably can downsize a little as such a system will use around 300W max.
