Scythe disappearing from US market?!

Post by kuzzia » Thu Nov 29, 2012 1:36 pm

What is going here?!

This is the message that you're greeted with when visiting www.scythe-usa.com

"To Customers and Users
Scythe USA Inc. has been a supplier of Scythe products for the past several years. In November 2012, Scythe USA had to make a difficult decision to end its operations as a result of the closure of its parent company. We greatly appreciate your business and support over the years.

Sincerely,

Masahiro Sakai

CEO"

If it's true, I really feel sad for American silent-PC enthusiasts.

While Scythe’s web-site in the U.S. informs about the closure of the company, web-sites in Japan and Europe continue to operate and at press time did not contain any information about the decision to shut down operations.

And from a reseller with a contract with Sycthe USA:
On Monday afternoon, our purchasing department was informed of the unfortunate news that Scythe USA, one of the companies from which we stock products, will be shutting down their operations within the United States of America at the end of November.

According to the CEO of Scythe, Masahiro Sakai, the unexpected closure of Scythe USA’s parent company is the cause for the sudden end of operations. However, Scythe Japan will still maintain operations and will take care of whatever orders Scythe USA cannot fulfill by their closure date.

Needless to say, we here at OutletPC will be sad to see Scythe USA go. Not only have they helped us stock their fantastic products and pass great prices on to you, but the company and its employees handled themselves with professionalism and class. We wish them all the best, and will miss being able to stock quality Scythe products.

Scythe USA will still accept purchase orders until Halloween, and RMA and warranty requests will be fulfilled until November 15, 2012, in advance of Scythe USA closing its doors fifteen days later on November 30.

The full text of Sakai’s letter to Scythe USA’s customers is below. You can still shop from our full stock of great Scythe case fans and other accessories at OutletPC.

_______________________________________________

Dear Customer:

Due to the unexpected closure of our parent company, we will be closing Scythe USA on 11/30/2012. All prepaid orders will be delivered by the closing date; otherwise Scythe Japan will take full responsibility for delivering your prepaid orders. Below are important dates before our closing date.

• 10/31/2012 Last day for accepting purchase orders
• 11/15/2012 Last day for accepting RMA requests
• 11/30/2012 Closing day

We want to thank you for your past business and tell you how much we have enjoyed having you as a customer. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if there is anything we can do for you before 11/30/2012.

Sincerely,

Masahiro Sakai
CEO

Now it seems like Scythe is not shutting down, merely their American arm but it is all confusing when they say that their parent company is closing down. I do wonder therefore if Scythe USA is actually a Scythe company or separate.

True about Thermaltake. Or Zalman with their relentless pursuit of futile Flower Heatsinks. I'm guessing the development of some of their over the top heatsinks like the Orochi didn't help but did they ever make some quality bargain heatsinks and fans! Many of their fans could be had for very cheap and undervolted to an inaudible rpm. I'm going to have to grab a couple Kaze Master Pro's before they go.

Edit: Just noticed the post about Scythe Japan still alive. Came here after another forum. That's good news lets hope they can keep their main products alive!

Here's a short note from Scythe EE - clicky - seems all gonna be OK, hopefully...

About Tt and Zalman and similar - yeah, they do suck, but they're very aggressive in terms of marketing - could explain while they're still afloat.

Signed - happy owner of THE Ninja, Shuriken, over a dozen fans, 3 SQD's, not to mention other Scythe coolers & stuff in the past

I'm not convinced that it's even going to make any difference them not having a local affiliate in the US. Remember that end users don't have to be in contact with the manufacturer as retailers sit in between. Those retailers put in the bulk orders which will still be fulfilled by Taiwan. Can't really see the mileage in a local affiliate for such a business. They may seek a distributor agreement with a wholesale business which might make more economic sense moving forward.

The current US entity was shutdown. Scythe corporate plans to open a subsidiary in the US for distribution/support and until then it'll be supported by corporate in Taiwan. So, bummer in the short term, good news long term.

Scythe USA's parent company was some local American distributor. It is like for example Caseking.de would create a subsidiary for distributing Lian Li products and name itself Lian Li Europe and then this Caseking.de would go bankrupt - the parent company of Lian Li Europe would still be Caseking.de and not Lian Li.
