Sea Sonic P-520FL vs X-650

Post by T K » Fri Aug 09, 2013 8:52 am

H iya|ello!

Trying to decide about...
- Sea Sonic Platinum Series 520 Fanless - Power supply ( internal ) - ATX12V / EPS12V - 80 PLUS Platinum - 520 Watt - active PFC (P-520FL)
- Sea Sonic X-650 - Power supply ( internal ) - ATX12V / EPS12V - 80 PLUS Gold - 650 Watt - active PFC „Hybrid Silent Fan Control“ version
( €15 price difference, Gold cheaper )

Been told that, "520 Platinum will feed this system quite exactly, but at full load it'll be on the edge with nothing left!!!". ...And suggested 650 Gold for that reason.

I had thought it'd be lower though...
- GPU reported as 210W max -- http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/ ... ng/25.html
- CPU: 77W

What'd be meaningful to think|do?

ConFiguration
Fractal Design Define R4 - - tower - ATX - Black Pearl - USB/Audio
Noctua NH-C12P SE14 - Processor cooler
Asus Socket 1155 Z77-A

Crucial Ballistix Tactical - Memory - 4 GB - DIMM 240-pin - DDR3 - 1600 MHz / PC3-12800 - CL8 - 1.5 V – 4 modules = 16GB (BLT4G3D1608DT1TX0CEU)
SSD: Samsung 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256 - Solid state drive - 256 GB - internal - 2.5" - SATA-600
HDD: Seagate Pipeline Hard drive - 2 TB - internal - 3.5" - SATA-600 - 5900 rpm - buffer: 64 MB ST2000VM003

Sales pitch?

My system is very similar (see sig) and I'm running it from a Seasonic 460PL fanless no problem.
With overclocking both the CPU and GPU and running torture tests on both 330W is realistic, without 77W+210W=287W is realistic, too. That means in games the system draws 200-250W with overclocking, without 170W-220W.
Seasonic makes high quality power supplies, you don't need to overspec when you buy quality. Get the 520FL Platinum or even the 460FL Platinum.

The fact that PSUs are fanless does not mean that there is no air flow through them. And as they have perforated covers the presence of an exhaust fan nearby creating negative pressure may well mean that that airflow is into the case. For the R4 where the PSU is bottom mounted that airflow will be towards the graphics card, potentially elevating the GPU temperatures and fan speeds. So the X-650 would be a better choice given the minimal price difference.

A G-360 would also power it just fine, though I perfectly understand it if people prefer not to have to use power cable adapters to get it done. I have the X-650 and it's great but I'd definitely go for the fanless platinum in this setup, even if the fan inside the X-650 would mostly be still. It'll be great. Stock fans at 5V using the fan controller should do, but you could always raise it to 7V and listen in on the difference or use the motherboard regulation if you prefer. If adding fans remember that overdoing positive pressure in the case could force warm air through the PSU. It won't generate much for itself though.

The 520 should be more than enough for your setup, my personal guess is you will never even break 400W under heavy load. The only issue with Seasonic is that some people report they have coil n whine, in my PC builds (micromi x660 n htpcimi x400) neither have any noise, whine or coil, but if you see user reviews you will find some. Some people have gone with the Superflower 500W fanless, that in the US is rebranded by Kingwin Striker 500 and by Rosewill SilentNight 500, both were reviewed by SPCR and came with editors choice, this would be my pick, but the X 520 is a great PSU, even jonnyguru rated as one of the best PSU out there.... the only thing is if you will get lucky or not with the whine/coil, but this is something not only directed to seasonic, any PSU can whine, so there is always a risk with any brand.
