Quiet Pc build, or not?

Post by Andre » Wed Aug 07, 2013 7:37 am

Hey guys, im following your site since quiet a while, and since im going to buy a new gaming pc soon, i would like to know some opinions bout this configuration.

when i asked bout a configuration , my main point were that the pc has to be very quiet, but still with powerfull components but no overclock.

not that i dont trust them, but you know, more opinion, more better (and still i think is not really the most silent build that can be done, or at least can be lowered a bit the noise, or not :s ? )

this is what they suggested me :

CPU Intel Core i5-4670 3.4GHz 6MB Socket 1150 84W con GPU HD Graphics 4600

mobo Gigabyte GA-H87-HD3 Socket 1150 Intel H87 DDR3 SATA3 USB3 ATX

SSD Samsung 840 UltraSlim Series 128GB Pro 2.5" Lettura 520MB/s Scrittura 390MB/s SATA3 Retail

Case Tower Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced ATX

RAM DDR3 Corsair Vengeance Blue CML16GX3M2A1600C10B LowProfile 16GB (2x8GB) PC3-12800 1600MHz CL10

Samsung SH-224BB 24x DVD/CD SATA Nero bulk

Hard Disk Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB 3.5" 7200rpm 32MB SATA3 ST31000524AS

VGA EVGA nVidia GeForce GTX 770 Classified Core 1150/1202MHz Memory GDDR5 7010MHz 4GB DVI HDMI DP

XFX 550w or 650w

cooler CPU Noctua NH-U14S Socket Intel/AMD

now im wondering.... is this configuration quiet? im not so sure of it (even tho i hope it is)

im really open about advices bout changes of components, especially case, supply and cooler, if you think there are better solution bout being quiet, but still performant.

yet i know the vga is noisy, but cant do nothing for that, vga are well know bout being noisy, even tho evga work well, i guess.

thanks in advance :)

Welcome to SPCR.

In general, a nice build. Here's a few comments:

- case: That's not a super quiet case. Better ones are: Fractal Define R4, Corsair 550D.
- CPU cooler: That's the best air cooler out there...but is overkill if you don't OC. Consider the NH-U12S.
- gfx card: if you game > 1080p, then the GTX 770 is a good card. If you game at 1080p, then all you need is a GTX 760.
- RAM: 16GB is overkill unless you have specific programs that suck up a lot of RAM. Games will seldom use more than 4GB.
- PSU: Don't know your country of origin...so don't know PSU availability. You can go with a 550W PSU. It'll be quiet/silent at idle/normal cpu loads and then the fan may ramp with heavy gaming - but...it'll be quieter than your gfx card or games sounds. Kingwin LZP-550 (Superflower Golden King) is a great PSU. Fan only spins with heavier loads. Same with Seasonic X series. In the always-on fan area, there's the Seasonic G 550/650, Be Quiet Dark Power Pro 10.

Others can better answer your questions, I'm not up to date on the current high end stuff. I would go with different memory though, like the Crucial Ballistix Tactical LP. Better timings.

And as CA_Steve says, not many have use of more than 8GB today.

No.
XFX is the only brand I know that had not one but two samples of a PSU blow up in a test. I don't know if their quality control has improved, but it's the brand I would least recommend.
One of these would be good: Seasonic G 550W, Seasonic X-650 or Kingwin 550W.

Solid base, no problems. Noctua cooler is great, but a little expensive. Thermalright Hr-02 Macho or Thermalright True Spirit 140 are just as good, just a little less expensive.
16GB is a lot, if you want to save some money get 8GB. There's no downside to 16GB except price.

On the upside, the airflow is good with so many large fans. It's huge, the fans aren't quiet and it's really designed for watercooling for which it is probably very good.
Good quiet and dampened cases are Antec P183, Fractal Design R4 and Corsair 550D among others. These are just about as good as you can buy off the shelf.

The best SSD currently available, but 128GB seems small. What do you want on the SSD?
Programs and games that run from SSD are very fast, but games take up lots of space say 5-10GB for most titles, Max Pay 3 and Bioshock Infinite are 30GB each.
Getting a bigger SSD is a matter of price, how much do you want to pay. For Windows and games I would suggest 256GB if you can afford it.
Andre wrote:Hard Disk Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB 3.5" 7200rpm 32MB SATA3 ST31000524AS
7200.12 means 7200RPM, 12th generation. 7200 RPM drives are louder than 5400 RPM drives.
If Windows, programs and games are on the SSD you don't need a fast secondary drive. Western Digital Blue or Red series 5400 RPM drives are often recommended here.

Cream of the crop of 770GTX cards. There are two versions with different cooler. The ACX cooler is more expensive and quieter than the stock cooler. The MSI 770GTX with Twin Frozr cooler is a little bit quieter than Evga's ACX cooler, but not by much. The Gigabyte 770GTX with Windforce 3X cooler is as quiet as the ACX but runs a little cooler.
I have an EVGA card because you don't void their warranty if you replace the cooler, which I did. If you keep the stock cooler the MSI is just a little bit quieter than the others.
4GB vs 2GB: I have a 4GB card and recommend 4GB cards. Few games currently need them, but I think that number will grow with XBone and PS4 ports. Is the extra cost worth it too you?
770 vs 760: 760 has the far better price/performance ratio. The 760 is fast enough for gaming at 1920X1080 resolution. Can you spare the extra money for a 770? Is the comparativly small performance bump worth the extra cost to you?
The cooler situation for 760 is exactly the same as for the 770.

first of all thanks for replies.

bout the 16 ram, im not a guy the upgrade pc constantly, lets say very 5 or more years, so those 8 gb more are some sort of reserve.

bout the ssd, i mostly use it for os and maybe heavy games like skyrim (gonna play it the online version asap it exit on 2014).

im not an hungry hd user, lets say right now i have 40 gb of hard disk used.

yeah i had my doubt about that case. no doubt about the quality, bot bout the noise it makes, that why i was aimed more to the fractal r4.

about hard disk, im dumb like few. i dont know the differences, i just heard the .14 are faster. but i just aim at a quiet system since i run at night, so the quieter, the better.

gtx 770 is a must for me especially about the 4gb. without considering that some game already satured the 2gb of vram, and considering im gonna play heavy games like can be skyrim at 1440p, hell i need that card like bread. thats why i aimed at the evga version, couse different from other brands, their support is something impressive.

Upgrading my opinion from overkill to utter waste. Go for 8GB.

50 euros more over a build of 1400 wont kill me, and instead of buying it next year, or between 2 years i do it now. becouse i wont buy anything for pc between a lot of years.

If you bought a GPU a year ago, which model would you have got? And how much "power" does last years crop of card has compared to the all new GTX7x0 series?

IMHO you should buy something in the GPU sector that fits your present needs.

If the games requiring 4GB GPU RAM really reach markets, chances are high your precious and expansive 770 doesn't pull more than 40 frames at medium settings, but the then coming GTX860 or even GTX960 will be running circles around your 4 GB 770 board.

I have a 10 years old pc, so most recent components Are of 2003

And by the way there Are games that already satured 2 gb of vram like far cry 3 or skyrim modded ( my fav game) , and the 770 can run them with ultra setting with loads of fps, so i dont see problem with it.

Sorry to bring this up again, but CL10 memory? Low profile 1.35v CL9 must be in the same price range. And perhaps a few euros more for low profile 1.35v CL8.

Also the 1TB 7200RPM drive stands out a bit.

Other than that it all fits. ;)

To be honest i have no idea what cl9-10 means.

Bout hard disk uhm, would even enough a 500 gb, but i have no idea here too..

Considering the SSD of 256, the hard disk would be just for storage

Those sticks of RAM you've picked are a bit old. You will probably never notice it, but if you're buying new RAM why not get a more recent model? Look for Crucial Ballistix Sport LP or better still Crucial Ballistix Tactical LP (those are the ones I'm familiar with). Corsair Vengeance Blue has been around for a while. They are cheap, but also big, hot and slow.

If the HDD is for storage you will probably not need a 7200RPM drive. Usually the 2 or 3 TB models gives the most bytes for the money, but if you don't need much storage you can save a bit and get a drive with less capacity.

There is some difference. Some of the bigger hardware sites with the gamer crowd in mind sometimes tests this stuff. I'm not familiar with the details, but usually the difference in a game is a couple of percent or something like that. Not much. But if you don't care about performance, why get that GTX 770? :)

You can read about CAS latency or CL here
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAS_latency

The reason I'm pressing this is that there is new RAM on the market. That's right. I'm telling you, when I first saw the Crucial Ballistix Sport LP.. Oh my God. I've always disliked the huge ridiculous RAM heatsinks that only exists for marketing really. And the Crucial Ballistix Sport LP. Look at it! It's a thing of beauty. Low profile? Yes indeed. Very low profile. And also 1.35v (standard is usually 1.5v), very nice. Lower power consumption, less heat. Me like. Timings also good, CL9. Nice for a 8GB stick, since the ones I'd seen before usually was CL9 for the 4GB sticks but CL10 for the 8GB sticks. I bought some of this beautiful RAM, 8GB sticks and 4GB sticks. And I was happy. For a while.
One day not much later I saw this other stick of RAM. Crucial Ballistix Tactical LP it is called. And I tell you, while it's slightly less breathtaking than that Crucial Ballistix Sport LP it's even more beautiful in truth. For it is CL8. Can you believe it! CL8. 8GB. 1.35v. Low profile.
I bought a few sticks. Would have bought more if I hadn't already gotten all of these Crucial Ballistix Sport LP sticks.

So you see. I'd hate to see you go with this old pair of clunky CL10 sticks. I wouldn't be right to that GTX 770 for one thing, holding it back like that.
