Need your help with building a mini itx system

Post by Hush » Thu Aug 22, 2013 2:23 am

A friend of mine is assembling a itx based computer, silence is not a top priority of his.
he is contemplating between the silverstone sg05 and sg06 (both of them are
the lite version w/o the PSU), The difference cost wise between them is about 8$ more for the 06 chassis
which one is the way to go then in this scenario?

Another question is about the psu, he has a pny 9600gt video card which is a carry over from the old rig
it's the one that connects to the power supply (i think there were two versions), which PSU should he get?
The Seasonic SS-300SFD and SS-350SFE cost exactly the same price, the ss-300sfd seems to
be the more reputable one, but is that enough for that video card or is it borderline and he should rather buy the 350sfe?
he will be using 2 hard drives (1 ssd and 1 hdd)

I'm a very big fan of silverstone cases, but i never really liked their Sugo series, part of it is some of them use proprietary or sfx PSU, so upgrading or even changing for a less noisy setup is most of the time out of the equation.

If i were to build a m ITX setup today, my choice would be Fractal Design Node 304, its design is similar to sugo, but uses a standard ATX PSU, this allows even high end aircooler inside the case (depends a lot into the design of the cpu socket on the mini itx motherboard), but you can fit a tower cooler easily, even twin towers like the silver arrow. The case can fit 6x 3.5hdd or 4 if you use a dedicated GPU. For the PSU and the style of the case, i like Seasonic G360 or if you need more power Seasonic G550/650, this are psu that will start upon powering the pc, i prefer this specially for the placement of the psu that wont get any air from the case fans, so this kinda psu will be working full time (not noisy in my experience with G550). If you wish to read more or check out some builds, look into Fractal Design Node 304 Owners Club

Sugo sg05 & 06 are frikking tiny - I do like them myself for the small format, but I have never tried to do a build in any of them. For those SFF PSU's I think you might want to look into if one or both has that 80 gold rating or not, for best possible power efficiency. And also whether they have 6/8 pin PCIe powerconnector for the 9600 GT if it needs one, or your friend wants headroom for future upgrades. BTW - U sure he wants to keep that old graphics card? Integrated graphics might be as good or better these days.

SG 05 if you're concerned for airflow.
SG 06 if U wanna go ... now, where's that ninja smiley I planned to put here?

The motherboard and cpu combo will be b75 and g2030, will that equal or beat the 9600 gt?

A G2030 sports a HD2500. As far as i have gathered, this IGP is not even close to a 9600GT. It's a bit difficult, because you have to guess from different benchmarks and different sites how big the difference is.

If you want to maximize graphics, you would need an Intel CPU with HD4000 or go AMD APU with an A10 or similar.

The seasonic's don't have pci-e connectors, is it possible to connect the card with a molex to to 6 pin cable?

Hi Hush,
What did you finally choose? SG05 or SG06?
Is it quiet with your components?

Really? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I thought all the Ivy Bridge Celerons and Pentiums had "Intel® HD Graphics" without any xxxx suffix.
