Motherboard pins in the way of cooler backing plate

Post by spilot » Mon Sep 09, 2013 2:50 pm

My motherboard, a Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H, has pins protruding from the bottom of the board where the backing plates for the K618 cooler need to go. The pins stick out more than the thickness of the foam on the backing plates so they would ground out. Is there anything I can do besides send the cooler back? Will I have the same problem with every other cooler that's heavy enough to need a backing plate?

It might be worth trying an alternative back plate. The Swiftech 1156 (1155/1150) Back Plate is an example. It is metal and uses four foam rectangles which should be deep enough to avoid any problems with motherboard pins.

If the pins are the left overs from solder you could file them down a little, or maybe snip the ends off. You would have to take great care not to damage the board or leave any fillings on the board though.
Or you could cut some plastic to go over the pins, raising the backing plate enough so it wont come in contact with them.

does that cooler really need a back plate? its 66mm tall so there shouldn't be that much leverage on it...

Edit: id love to get a mini review of that cooler if you do get it mounted properly. 8)

My newbie error. I had the back plates on backwards.
