What size case do I need?

Post by takeawaydave » Tue Dec 31, 2013 9:33 am

Hi All
I have (finally) been purchasing some new parts to build a new machine going for the following:

CPU 2 x Xeon X5660
MB Supermicro X8DTL-6F
RAM 4 x SAMSUNG 8GB REG ECC MEMORY

I have yet to finalise all parts but its looking like:

GPU AMD FirePRO v4900
2 x Supermicro SNK-P0040AP4 Heatsinks
Seasonic Platinum Series PSU (model / wattage tbc)
Asus PCE-AC68 Wireless card
ORICO PFU3-2O2I USB3 Card

plus a reuse of assorted HDD and SDD using the onboard and additional PCI-e SAS2008 card.
Now I am looking for advise on which case to buy.
I would like to get the Antec P183 V3 however I am not entirely sure it will fit.
The Supermicro website says it is ATX however the manual says it is EATX.

12.00" (L) x 10.00" (W)
or
304.80mm (L) x 254.20mm (W)

Is any one able to confirm compatibility ? or is a P280 required ?

Standard ATX sizer is 305x244mm. By the measurements you have given it would be 10mm too wide however this does not mean that any extra mounting holes will be required and so long as there are no parts of the drive cages that will collide (look at some detailed system internal pictures with this case to check) then you should be fine. Many EATX cases are not full EATX size so a standard ATX case will often do, in some cases a little trimming of drive cages may be required though. I would try to stick to standard ATX as EATX just becomes a silly size especially as you're not putting many other components in the system.

Phisically the mobo fits inside the P183, the standoffs are ok, but you have priorly to check that the hard drive cages won't block any mobo's port and that cable routing holes stay clear.

Correct - the setup will be 1-1-0 , 1-1-0 not optimal since I don't have 6 modules. The complete build is being done on a sub $1500 dollar budget ;)
