Which case 550D or R4?

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

Which case 550D or R4?

Post by falcon26 » Sat Jan 11, 2014 5:29 pm

Looking for a new case for a new build. Its either going to be the Corsair 550D or The Fractal R4 (Perhaps XL R2) Looking for clean looks, plenty of cable management behind the motherboard tray. And of course quiet :-)

Thanks

Both cases are good choices, i give the slight edge to R4 out of 140mm fans and less 5.25 bays, but if you do need 3x 5.25 bays, then the 550D will be a better choice or XL R2.

I do like the 550D :-) but I thought something different might be in order. Just wasn't sure what most people were saying about the R4 in terms of cable management and quietness. I know on the 550D one thing I love is how much room you have behind the motherboard tray. Its like 2 inches which is perfect. For me cable management is my number one concern then noise.

I was also trading off between the two cases. Ended up going with the R4 (see my signature for the gory details) because I didn't have an opportunity to see/mess with the 550D...and the R4 seems to go on sale one week a month at Newegg for $80. I really need to post some photos. :D

Cable management was a breeze. You don't have 2 inches, but everything fit. Place the mobo power cable first and then everything else can fit. All in all, it was a pleasure to build up a PC in this case. The included case fans are quiet @ 5V, but not silent. I'm guessing the same is true with the 550D.

I actually went and ordered the Fractal XL R2. It looks like its got plenty of room behind the motherboard and lots of space on the inside. I just hope those 140MM fans are quiet :-)

EDIT: Never mind I cancelled the order. After measuring the case its way way to big. Maybe the R4 instead
