Quiet PC Case that is 420mm or less in depth?

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

Quiet PC Case that is 420mm or less in depth?

Post by romsyam » Sat Feb 08, 2014 9:59 am

I am new here so Hello everyone :)

I wonder if I can ask for some assistance off you.

I have a micro ATX Asus FM275-DGS in a rubbish case at present. The case is placed in a cupboard part of the desk.

Problem I have is that I only have a depth for a case up to 420mm though the width can be up to 250mm AND HEIGHT ABOUT 530mm.

My issue currently is that the noise is unbareable so though I would start with a decent case before sorting the rest out :)

Are there any good quiet PC case that are less than 420mm deep?

Many thanks

Welcome to SPCR.

I'm not familiar with that motherboard - can you point to a link for it?

What other components are in this PC that you want to shove into a cupboard?

Is there breathing room for a PC in this space or is it enclosed?

Hi Steve

I probably could have described the scenario a little better.

I have
Asrock FM2A75M-DGS A75 Socket FM2 http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/FM2A75M-DGS/
AMD A10 5800K Black Edition 3.8GHz Socket FM2 4MB L2
2 x Crucial 4GB DDR3 1866Mhz Ballistix Elite Memory Module CL9 1.5V
1 x Corsair 430W CX Builder 80 Plus Bronze PSU
and the case is the rubbish but cheap Casecom MA-1199 Piano Black MATX Tower Case :)

The cupboard has a door on it with a 30mm gap to the top and at the back it is fully open so nothing stopping airflow there. I wilol probably have the door open most of the time but when the pc is off I will shut it. I didn't really think about this build as it was my first and needed something quick. (had it about 10-12 months now) and I didn't have this desk then either.

I have 2 x 22" monitors as I use it mainly for trading and it seems to heat the cpu up so am after a case and a cooler.

I suppose ideally at some point I will upgrade the motherboard so a decent case now that I could use for the future would be good.

thanks

Thanks for the additional info. Your heat load isn't that bad. The list above is a good start for cases. As you've got a 100W TDP CPU, it'd be worth getting a decent tower cooler. The problem is your RAM has CRAZY high (and useless) heatspreaders. So, you'd either need to remove the heatspreaders, or get a cooler that doesn't conflict with the RAM...and the better coolers are too high for some of these cases. Something like the Thermalright TRUE Spirit 120M (product page) would work with most if not all of the cases and this RAM.

Yeah I didn't think the height of the heat spreaders would be such an issue when I got it lol It is the cpu fan that makes most noise so your recommendation is really helpful.

I have looked at the Fractals but think the measurements above are the height ones not the depth. Not sure about the others just checking them out now.

Seems the silverstone tj08-e might be a good choice if quiet is what I'm after?? Just been reading the review here.

I suppose a decent case and heatsink will be a good place to start in making this system quiet :) I forgot to add that the pc is left on 24 hours a day 5 days a week. Don't suppose that would matter though would it?

nope. Other than using electricity and heating up the room.

The Silverstone is fine. The Fractal Define Mini is also good.

It is warm in here with the pc on

Silverstone it is. The Fractal Define Mini is still 490mm deep.

Thanks for all the help till now CA_Steve and quest_for_silence

Sure thing. Have fun with your build! See us again when the next component annoys you :)

Yeah, my bad, I stand corrected.

About Silverstone, even the FT-03 and SG-09/10 are well under the 420mm mark.

The CPU isn't ideal as it consumes a lot of power, something like an Intel Pentium G3220 might've been a better choice. Maybe it still is. ;)

Yes I have a 500gb drive. I think the gpu is integrated. You are right though I was clueless when I first got what I've got. In hindsight I should've come here for some help :)

Thanks for the advice guys. Bought the case and cooler and built it today :)

There's a little vibration rattle somewhere that I will need to find but other than that much quieter than the last case and cooler.

Quite impressed with the case to be fair. Just need to figure out how to get the fan speeds down a little now as I don't think I need them running at 850 rpm when idle.
