Time for a new Elysium Beast: V4.0

Post by pm.stacker » Sun Jul 13, 2014 3:02 am

Now with 12 cores and ready for 32 drives.
The old Tyan S7025 network cards died on me during a driver update (maybe because of a shorted cable... :-x) so I had to think about a new hardware platform. At first I thought about dual LGA2011 but it'd cost me a lot of $$$ to get two 6-core Xeons and a good mobo, so I decided to get a last generation Supermicro LGA1366 board and two used Westmere CPUs

CPU: 2x Intel Xeon L5640 Westmere 2.267GHz 60W 6C/12T
CPU heatsinks: Scythe SCSMZ-2100 Samurai-ZZB adapted to LGA1366 Xeon
CPU Fans: Scythe stock SL9225SL12M-P
Mobo: Supermicro X8DTH-6
RAM: recycled 16384MB ECC UDIMM (planning on adding two more for 20480MB)
GPU: EVGA Geforce GT630 1GB Supercooled single-slot DIY
Storage controllers: onboard ICH10 and LSI2008, Promise EX8650 and EX16650
Storage controllers fans: 2x Scythe S-FLEX SFF80B
Bottom storage department fans: 2x Scythe SY1225SL12SL
Front 3.5" storage department and IOH fan: Noctua NF-P12-PWM
Power supply: Enermax Platimax 1000W
USB3.0: Startech professional X4 card
Firewire: IOI 2+1 ports

SSD1: OCZ RevodriveX2 100GB
SSD2: OCZ Vertex3 60GB
SSD3: OCZ Vertex2 60GB

HDD: 8xWD10EADS/EACS, 4xWD10EFRX, 4xWD5003ABYX, 4xWD2500HHTZ, 4xWD5000BEVT/BPVT

ODD: same as before, now DVD-RAM drive is USB2.0 external

Storage systems: bottom 16x3.5" SATA extreme rigidity (Promise EX16650), front 2x Icy Box IB-2222SSK SAS/SATA (8x2.5", Promise EX8650), front Lian-li modified EX-H34B SATA600 (LSI2008), side 4x2.5" SATA600 (LSI2008)

Excellent vibration dampening despite absence of suspension mounts, waiting for two more Velociraptors to make the 4x RAID0 volume.

Thanks for sharing, your build was one that almost made me go into Elysium, nice to see the new upgraded build.

Holy mother of hard drives.
This many hdds is real challenge to make quiet.

Well not that challenging... just choose the right drives and mounting systems  comparing to the old 3x4 bottom cage, this one (4x4, I cut out the bottom front 5.25" bays) looks like an expanded one but it's just the looks: it's fully braced on every side and on top with the industrial panel, every single plastic rail is bolted to both the cage and cage-to-cage bracing, for a total of ~70 M3 or M4 hex wrench bolts, and bolted to the case with another 10x M4. Even the bottom hollow support rails have been replaced with thicker ones. This way every vibration the drives could transmit to the cage get damped by the system sheer weight (45kgs) and rigidity. After a short "break-in" period when powering up (HDDs require some mins to stabilize motor bearings), there's no strange hum due to different freq vibrations summing up.
The Icy Box 2222SSK cages are very well built, all metal with rails and springs to hold the drives firmly in place, and WD Blue drives are very quiet anyway, it'd be a different story if I put some Savvios in there
The front 3.5" cage (a Lian-li EX-H34B without the door) is another story, being it fixed to the case only with 4 bolts, that's a little picky about what you put into it: 4xWD1003FBYX tend to vibrate a lot due to one of those being recertified with a different motor. Velociraptors are way better and act almost like notebook drives, in fact I decided to ditch the 4x RE4 drives and add 2 more VRs to the two I already had, this makes for a smaller temp volume (1.0TB vs 4.0TB) but less noisy, less heat and faster (should reach ~600MB/s)

Isn't a 71 degree core temp under load high?

What kind of loads does this machine run? Massive storage combined with high CPU power seems somewhat odd to me.

Glad to see you're still completely insane...

... and congrats for this unique build !

Out of curiosity, how much does the whole thing weigh ? Aren't you afraid it will collapse on itself and turn into a black hole ?
