Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3: BIG, heavy, quiet & effective

Post by halcyon » Thu Aug 21, 2014 4:53 am

Looks interesting, anybody tried yet on a warmer/faster CPU setup?

Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3
http://www.bequiet.com/en/cpucooler/482
- LxWxH: 150 x 137 x 163 mm
- Almost 1.2kg
- All major sockets
- 2xPWM fans (120mm + 135mm)

So big in fact that may only work with low-profile DIMMs and may block the first expansion slot on most motherboards.

Very nice reviews/measurements so far, even against some top notch liquid cooling kits:

Personally I'm planning a new Haswell-E/X99/LGA2011 setup this fall and this looks like a good quiet(ish) contender.

Any other competition out there, that the fine folks of SPCR would recommend?

NoFan all the way! RAH RAH RAH!! I'm running the CR-95C on a 4790k. The new version is a bit smaller, def check that one out too. If you want to use the CR-95C then you will have to plan your build around it, worth it tho.

It really comes down into how is Haswell E design, we seen the latest iterations of none E CPUs do get hot, some blame it to tim that intel uses and dropping the soldiering.... a lot of deliding has showed dramatic improvements, but seems haswell E will be soldiered.

In todays big high end tower coolers we start to see deminishing returns, although i still think there is a gain, its not much. If you were to go that route, then i would consider Noctua NH-15, Thermalright Silver Arrow and Prolimatech Genesis. But one cooler that imo is worth a shot is the kotetsu, specially with how cheap it is.

Thanks for the tips!

I have been surfing all over the place and it still seems that the old Phanteks PH-TC14PE with Corsair AR1400 Quiet Edition fans beats even Noctua D15 and all the other new killer coolers (regardless of fans) for both cooling and noise. That is, with same fans, low or high, it performs better under very high thermal loads (tests at xbitlabs.com).

Of course, it'll still take me 1-2 months to build, so things might change by then...
