How do you monitor drive temperatures

Everyone talks freely about the different temps that their hard drives run at. How do you measure the hard drive temperature?

Do new-ish drives have some kind of sensor and firmware built in?

Or, do you need to physically place sensors on the drive?

And, I'm guessing you need some kind of program like Motherboard Monitor 5 to get the readings?

Have you tried speedfan ? I think it measures the temps using S.M.A.R.T which most modern drives have.

The newest version of MBM5 has built-in HDD temp monitoring. It uses the thermal readings from the built-in sensors just like Speedfan and Dtemp and HDDtemp do.

All newer HDDs have built-in monitoring, it's called "S.M.A.R.T.". It monitors a bunch of different parameters of the HDD and will try and predict if the HDD is going to fail. Search Google for more accurate info

Sorry, I never trust internally reported temperatures. Call me old fashioned, but I wedge a cheap temperature probe between my hard drives when I want to make sure they are still at 40 degrees. Probes can be had almost anywhere, and cost next to nothing. I'm currently using a cheap UEI probe from Frys ($11), but YMMV.

I don't think the WD's have temp monitoring. Do they?

how is this activated? to get HD readings from MBM5?? I'm having trouble deciphering this issue!

I agree with MBM being alittle confusing. Try Dtemp instead. All it does is HDD temps, and its as simple as it possibly could be. Dtemp download

It's what I use to monitor my drives.

Lol i wasnt gonna say anything but i agree with you, no one bite my head off for saying but i dont like kids. I dont get what people see in them, they are stinky and expensive and LOUD. And you spend your whole life looking for a good woman only to see her body deformed and any attention she once paid you gone. No kids for me, hopefully

It all depends on the parents and how you raise them...raise them well, and let them help you retire early when they get a nice paying job.

Digidoc 5 flat probe wedged in between the HDD PCB and the Plastic protector of the HDD PCB, I found that the temperatures that I read from this probe is higher than the DTEMP temps and the one's that is read from the probe is other positions

Im too young for a vassectomy, im not sure they would even do one on me if i wanted to. Plus I would have to get some sperm frozen just in case I ever needed it. LOL wow this topic has gone way off course.

I have a 14 month old and a baby on the way, they will be 19 months apart, so I can attest that Mountain Dew (at least code red anyway) doesn't lower your spermcount, at least not dramatically enough to stop reproduction.

p.s. just so you know, breastfeeding also does not prevent pregnancy

Back on the topic, there is a nice program that monitors drive temps at http://www.siguardian.com There is a lite version and a more complex one, they do cost, but I think they both have a 30 day trial. Just thought I'd throw it in the discussion
