Hi All,

I thought that my experience may be of some use to anyone deciding on a new PSU

For the record, I have installed my new Nexus 3000 PSU and I cant hear it!

Man, you should see the smile on my face!

I didnt realise how loud my hard-drives were until I installed this!

Thanks for the reviews and reccomendations. It helped me make a good decision.

hey how about under load, does it get any louder if ur playing games for a few hours or anything?

im with ya tim... i just built my new comp with a nexus 3000 and two 5v'd panaflo's... i pretty much have to check the LED's to make sure its on. it totally rocks. its a little toasty in there, but nothing too bad....

thats good to hear. i am thinking of gettin that. its £60 here, but they have a dampened case for £130. since my case is, to be honest, crap, is it worth gettin this (its inc. psu) over gettin another pretty case and sticking dampening in it?

Not really - at least I havent noticed any difference in volume, just in internal case heat.

The fan runs much more slowly than a 'normal' PSU which is good for noise but my internal temperature is up by 4-5 degrees.

I have also suspended my noisy Fujtsu HD's put some 7V adaptors on my fans and taken tha fan off my Parhelia (which is now cooled by an 80mm Zalman blowing over PCI) but some hard gaming gets my 1.1 Ghz AMD Athlon up to around 58 degrees with mboard temps of about 40.

Is the Nexus really that quiet? Is it really hard to tell if the PSU fan is spinning as some people say? How loud will the Nexus get when it's running at maximum capacity?

I've got a 400watt QTechnology rated <28dB(A) and I find it too loud, so I'm looking to get the Nexus but wondering if there will be much difference since there is only 2dB(A) between them.

Isn't this a 2-fan unit? Assume it is at least 3-4 dBA louder than a 1-fan PSU if the same fan is used at the same voltage.

The Nexus will actually pump close to 12V to the fan if it is delivering 300W in a real system for any length of time. It should. At that point it is not quiet, but it's not a blaster. Chances are you will NEVER be able to push the PSU that hard & steady for long enough for it to reach max fan speed.

I don't know about the 400watt QTechnology fans, what kind of thermal/fan speed curve it has. Do you find it too loud all the time or only when the fans speed up? If the latter, when does it speed up?

Yes, this the Qtechnology 400watt PSU has 2 fans. The PSU fans are easily noticable on bootup. I've tried disconnecting all HDs and CD-Roms to see if the PSU fans would run any slower/quieter but I did not notice any difference. The fans do get slightly louder as the PC warms. The fan at the back of the PSU is an ADDA fan, I can't see the exact model number at the moment but I think it's the same as the Q-Technology QT-02300 PSU reviewed here. I can't see the 2nd fan but I'll try and find out later.[/quote]

The QTec 400w PS is the brother of the 300w PS reviewed here. It is quoted to by them to be 2dBA louder, I don't have any reasons to doubt this. Probably it's more than a couple, but anyway it would be noiser than the Nexus unit by quite a bit. The Nexus unit starts at a mere 22dBA whch is 6dBA difference, if the facts are correct. I personally think you will notice a difference in noise.

Anyway before forking out money for a new PS, why not remove 1 of the fans the PS and see if you get a reduction of noise. Or simply just stop 1 of the fans spinning. Mike has mentioned mods for this elsewhere, you could try it.

I don't like the idea of modding the insides of a PSU since I'm no good at electronics.

I actually have a 250watt Powerman PSU that came with a Case I bought 1 1/2 years back, it's extremely silent but the airflow is very low and little air pressure is felt behind the PSU. I struggle to tell if the machine is on if I remove all case/cpu fans and HDs. I use it for my 2nd PC:- P3 700, 2HDs, CDRW, GF4 and it's stable. But this PC is far from quiet as the HDs are old and noisey and the CPU fan is like a tornado.

I'm just wondering if the Nexus will be as quiet as the Powerman PSU.

Anycase I will probably end up buying the Nexus as it is the most quiet PSU on the market. At least I'll know I can't get anymore quiet.

I got the Nexus 3000 yesterday. It is definately a lot quieter than my old Q-Technology 400 Watt PSU. I was worried that my PC would demand too much power from the Nexus and cause the fan to jump in speed. I am pleased that this has not happened, at least no big increases.

At the moment I am powering an Athlon XP 2000+, GF4200i 128mb, 3 HDs, 1 CDRW, 1 DVD drive, network card, SB Live and 3 Panaflo fans.
