I have three of these running at 12v and I tried the "2 ft test" that I've heard mentioned a good number of times which involves standing 2 feet away from the cpu to see if there is any noticeable noise. Unfortunately, the results were disappointing as I heard the high-pitched hum I heard about. Even when I just ran the cpu fan, I noticed the high-pitched whistle. I did invest in 3 pin to 4 pin convertors to switch the power to 5v so hopefully this will make a significant difference.
Then I read about a deal from an online store from MikeC's post which might take away the need for me to do this. He mentioned that this store, Mechatronics, was overstocked with fans even quieter than the panaflos at a low price. But this was in May and I'm sure everyone that could've gotten in on it did.
My question is(or rather questions are): can I get these fans from another store at about the same price as the panaflo l1as, since the model and make weren't mentioned in the post, and if so where? Also, are there any other fans you guys would recommend over the panaflo that's in the price range of $2-$5? Of course, this takes the Papst 8412NGL out of the race.
Thanks in advance.
1. Why 12V? Why not 7 or 5? The difference between the Panaflo and quieter fans at 12V is SMAller than the dif between the Panaflo at 12V vs ~7-8V. %V will make them silent, essentially.
2. Are you sure the whine is not your hard drive?

3. The Mechatronics fan still seem to be available for that price. Model and make are in the post.
