DIY Thumbscrew

Post by powergyoza » Sat Jan 18, 2003 2:17 pm

If you need a thumbscrew in a pinch and can't make it out to the modding store, you can make one yourself (if you already have these tools).

Tools and materials
  • Hotglue gun w/gluestick
  • Regular case screw
  • Glove, rag, or pliers
Simply gob large amounts of hot glue to the end of the screw. Build it up in layers if needs. Shape as necessary. You might get burned if you hold the screw with your finger as you apply the glue, so use a glove, rag or pliers to hold it.

That's interesting. For me, I'd rather just "wait" on getting to the computer store and slapping down $2 for a pack of 10 thumb screws. :)

If experience serves me right, then yes, eventually it will rip off w/ repeated use. Hot glue doesn't bond well to anything w/o pulp fibers.

So far, I've used it a few times. No problems yet.

For something longer-lasting I expect you could use something like "Chemical Metal" or "JB Weld" or "Milliput".
