Seagate Barracuda v ATA(IDE) interface with 8mb of cache

Post by cgr1971 » Thu Jan 23, 2003 7:28 am

This came from seagate customer service.

You ask " Does Seagate have any plans to release any ATA(IDE) dirves
with
8MB of cache.?"

The ST3120024A has 8 MB cache, there are none available on the web.

I wish we could explain why there are over 800 in inventory at Synnex:
800-756-9888 but none anywhere else.
1101SGT-ST3120024A 120GB with 8mb cache, 7200rpm, Ultra ATA
Qty 889

Thank you for your inquiry. We appreciate your consideration of
Seagate
products for your storage solutions.

how bizare!

Going slightly OT but I'm wondering why HDDs only have a few megs of cache anyway with ram so inexpensive. Sure, I understand the argument that a larger cache makes for bigger search times, but even a HUGE cache in RAM is going to be a lot faster than reading from a platter.

Myabe I'm missing an impotant point - by my understanding the HDD's cache stores frequently read data in a look up table so the next time the controler asks for it there's no need to read the drive. Why not a 32meg cache, or more?
