I am going ahead with my self-built aluminium 4U rackmount case
. At the moment, I am finalising the design and sourcing materials. Since I hear that people find aluminium a bit noisy, I am going to be isolating all the components from the case, and suspending the hard discs. I am looking for two things:
1. Sheet rubber of some kind. 3, 4, or 5 mm thick I think should do it. this material will be cut into gaskets for mounting the motherboard tray, the PSU, and the optical drives. I am looking at sorbathane or neoprene at the moment. Neoprene may be easier to find here, and cheeper. I am wondering if neoprene is a suitable material for this job? How is its flamability, I hear they use neoprene in solid rocket fuel! How about the flamability of Sorbathane? Is there another rubber gasket material that is better than these two?
2. Elastic cord for suspending the hard drives. Is bunge cord or sewing-shop elastic better? Again, what is the flamability like of these materials? Do they perish? Does anyone have specific recommendations (type / size / diamiter / maker?). Are there any other materials that would do the job?
Any help or advice is much appreciated!
