How heavy can a clip mounted heatsink safely be?

Hello folks,

I need a heatsink for my Athlon 1.3 Ghz proc. I don't want to take the motherboard out to mount a heatsink through the mobo holes, so I am left with a choice of heatsinks that mount with clips. I've almost decided on the Swiftech MCX370 copper. It is so much heavier than the AMD recommeneded 300g that I'm a little nervous. Should I be?

I have an SK-7 with an 80mm fan on it...about 600-700g total (454g per pound, FYI)

Sturdy, not worried about it. I would only be worried if I were to move it...

SLK-800 on Socket 370 here. I'm not worried about it because I don't move my case much and when I do I just don't bounce it around.

I'd check into using a SK-7 or an SLK-800 if I was you. It's a much better heatsink than the Swiftech (I had one). It cools better and you can use an 80mm fan on it. With your 1.3 Athlon you can probably run a Panaflo L1A or maybe an M1A which would be much quieter than any 60mm fan that you could put on the Swiftech.

Shipped my computer to Korea with a 450 gram heatsink/fan combo on it

Well, the thing had a single prong heatsink clip on it and it did not break. All was not good, however

The mobo cracked from the weight and rough handling. Bought a new mobo and slapped a SK-7 monster on it (uses all three prongs) and now am running quiet and overclocked. (I have to see if I can duplicate 60 watts of heat for an upgrade)

Hopefully, Thermalright will produce a 1KG copper heatsink for a 92mm fan!

Those 2500 Bartons are around the corner...

I use a Thermalright SLK-800 w/ 80mm x 25mm fan. I don't move my case around much. I have heard that the SLK-800 clipping mechanism isn't that great though. Supposedly it doesn't put enough pressure onto the CPU so the temps are better when the mobo is in a horizontal position.

I tried that experiment last week. SLK-800 + 7-volted M1A. My CPU temps stayed the same whether the case was horizontal or vertical. My SLK-800 has been installed/removed about six or seven times. Apparently the clip on mine is holding up fine.
