Suspend a 1046

I've read that quite a few people have their pumps suspended here. Does anyone have pictures they could post, especially if you use an Eheim pump. I wanted to mount mine vertically on the rear of my case where the exhaust fans would normally be, but apparently vibration is a serious issue... just how bad is it if it's mounted to the case?

BTW, I've recently switched one of my boxes from a 1046 to a HPPS (12V 1046 on sterioids). It's significantly quieter than the 1046 (didn't think that was possible...)

yeh turbokeu from the OCAU forums used those Polyurethane Cylindrical Sandwich Mounts very successfully. using those, he managed to mount an eheim 1250 to an aluminium case, with all pump vibration being absorbed by the mounts.

pump vibration is a major problem, you definitely want to decouple your pump somehow and those sandwich mounts are the best non-ghetto method i've heard of. without them, it'll vibrate your case to bits.

BTW, you could also mount a thick metal plate to the sandwich mounts and mount the pump to the plate - the point being to add to the pumps mass which should reduce vibration (it should move the resonant point to a lower frequency). Probably unnecessary and will add to the shear force on the mounts - but will give them less oscillation to deal with...

or better, mount the pump with sandwich mounts vertically (i.e. mounts are horizontal) to some slab of wood, and mount this slab of wood with more sandwich mounts to the case, with the mounts vertical. (for lack of better words)

double decoupling, with no added shear force.

Of course, you could also just hang the thing on a couple of bungee cords. IMHO the easiest way to keep it from swaying around would be a four point mount. Get another pump base (so you now have two). Slide a base onto either side of the pump (same way the current base is slid into "tracks" on the bottom of the pump) and suspend from the four topmost holes. You could run additional bungee(s) from the bottom holes downwards or sideways if you don't want the pump moving at all - only an issue if you're carrying this box off to LAN parties...
