Thank you.

Just how many CPU's does it take to get 9,400+ PPW?

In my case, 12. Two desktop PC's, one Home Theater PC, plus 9 in a "folding farm" consisting of one Linux server and 8 diskless headless "blades".

Thanks for the welcome.

I'm still new to this thing but I was wondering how one can tell the difference between the different work units. When you first download a unit can you tell (a) approximately how long it will take and (b) how many points it is worth?

Also, I am running the console version without any flags. It seems like it is detecting the right settings so do I really need to force SSE (I'm running it on Intel) or any of the other optimizations?

mr_pickles, and many others Welcome aboard 8) .

The programmes you desire are :

Electron Microscope 111, or...

Folding @ Home Logstats (F@HLogstats).

Links for both of which can be found on the Folding@Home Useful Links thread, scroll down to the 'Folding Monitors' section.

Along with all manner of other usefull/interesting programmes.

On the SPCR's Folding@Home forum, there are a number of 'sticky' threads at the top which are a mine of information for all sorts of F@H stuff.

Any problems just search in the forum's or post a question... and don't worry it won't be the silliest question asked, that's my job  (But only when nullobject is on vacation  )

Regards

You are correct, SSE is on by default with Intel processors. I typically run with the following options on my P4 boxes:
  • -advmethods

It used to be that -advmethods was a "no brainer" since it was the best way to avoid Tinkers, which were not worth as much as Gromacs on modern cpus. However, since Stanford changed the benchmark machine a few weeks ago (from a 500MHz Celeron to a 2.8GHz P4), Tinkers and Gromacs are, in theory, worth the same. In practice, however, it isn't quite working out that way, so many people are still using -advmethods to indicate a preference for Gromacs.
  • -forceasm

Although SSE is on by default (on Intel cpu's with SSE), the client can sometimes revert to "standard loops" following "simulation instability". This flag makes certain that assembly optimizations are always used. It shouldn't be necessary, but...
  • -verbosity 9

The verbosity level determines how much is written to the log file (FAHlog.txt). 3 is the default, 9 is the maximum and provides the most detail.

Could I talk you into a quick tutorial on setting up a "blade," either here or in another topic? I have a spare motherboard and usb wireless ethernet card. I could pick up a cheap CPU and PSU. Software requirements?

Copper, there was nothing "quick" about it for me, although people who are a lot smarter than me might disagree. For a little insight, here are some links:

Hao_Dong is kicking some butt!!! He's right behind me, but churning out points like there is no tomorrow.

Things have gotten real quiet around here, like it does just before a tornado arrives. :) Will my Borged machines save me? I don't think either has posted a WU today or yesterday. Come on Borgies!!!!!

Howdy!

David
And a quite belated Howdy! back atcha. Been a busy time for me, but I'm starting to be able to take a little more interest today. Found the Good Link for tracking my and the team's progress; had been doing some minimal, marginally useful tracking in Excel since I started but hey... no color coding!

Downloaded and installed the console folder yesterday, curious to see if that makes any appreciable difference in my P/D. Gonna see about Borging some of the other workstations around the office, perhaps even some of the servers. In the meantime, I'm folding on;

Athlon XP 2800+, Asus A7N8X-X, 1GB ram, 2xWD800JB striped. Work machine, I'm a programmer/project manager. (Joys of a small shop)
HP Omnibook 6000 P3-700, 256MB Ram, slooooow HD. (but it does nothing but fold)

So anyway, Howdy!

Tom

David
Thanks for the welcome! And that first WU - that took my computer almost an entire week to complete! During that time, I couldn't believe how some users had folded several thousands of proteins...my next 2 have been knocked over in much quicker time though.

I'm trying to look for ways add those flags (eg -advmethods) to my program, I'm using the GUI interface atm. Could anyone help me out with that? Thanks!

I *think* that you can add it via a shortcut -- add then at the end after the program name. Is your CPU an Intel or AMD?

Welcome to all you newb's, 8)

Lightning, to add the flags,

Click 'Start/programs/Folding@Home'

RIGHT click 'Folding@home 4' and select (left click) 'Properties,

In the box to the right of 'Target' it will say (Assuming you installed to the C-Drive)

"C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe"

You need to add your flags to the right of that . There should be a space before each subsequent entry i.e. it should look like:

"C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe" -advmethods -forceasm -forceSSE -verbosity 9

Depending on which flags you use.

More info can be found Here

Scroll down to the 'How do I install my client?' section, just below that it explains about which flags to use.

Hope this helps, excuse me if I over simplified it.

More info/links of all sorts regarding F@H can be found in the 'Stickies' at the top of the SPCR's Folding'Home Forum

Any questions just yell.

Regards

Pete.

Ah so THAT'S how you add switches in windows. I know how to do it in Dos, tried playing around with target line last night but couldn't get it to work lol. Cheers Pete.
