I have an Enermax 430W EG465P-VE (FCA) Whisper adjustable fan speed power supply. I can't hear it at all, and my system is pretty darn near quiet. Would I really gain any advantage from modding this supply, or is it really only for louder models?

Hey, if you're happy with it... Maybe I'm more sensitive to noise, or my environment is quieter to begin with (it is pretty quiet where I live & work), but none of the stock Enermax PSU have been quiet enough for me. You'll note that my modding article featured an Enermax. If the nosie level stayed at the startup level, I'd leave it alone, but it doesn't, at least not the samples I've had. They always get a bit noiser over time as the coils (& the thermistor for the fan) heat up. <br> <br>The adjustable fan speed Enermax is a different beast. I've been playing with one for a couple of weeks & have a review coming up soon. The way it operates is not the same as the older Enermax model I modded, so don't go digging into yours yet, at least not till you've seen my review.

I'll be interested to read that review, then. I'm fairly sensitive to noise--when I decided to finally invest in a new rig, my brain reached critical mass with research. I had the system custom built with silence in mind, and have continued modding it (accoustical dampening, snipping out the cutouts and replacing them with rounded grills, rubber grommets, etc.). This beast is amazingly quiet, and levels at under 40 Celsius at full load. Still, it can go quieter. My old computer was not amazingly loud (it was only a Pentium 100), but the constant low hum was enough of an irritant that I couldn't work in the same room with it. <br> <br>Right now, the electrical hum of my monitor is louder than my computer. <IMG SRC="modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> <br> <br>Which is irritating. Wow, all the stock enermax I've tried are never quieter than the hum of any monitor I have ever used. Exception being this crappy old 13 inch monitor at work they once setup as a 5th workstation. Only about half the staff could even tolerate using that monitor, I wasn't one of them;). My seagate barracuda was also easily louder than my monitor hum. <br> <br>-Ken
