Seagate 7200.11 320GB single platter (ST3320613AS)

Anyone have any experience with this 320gb single platter from Seagate?

It seems this 320gb model was launched after the other 7200.11 models (500gb, 750gb, 1tb) which are all based on 250gb plates.

Performance sounds interesting, but I'm wondering whether Seagate have fixed those annoying idle click noises that appear to be common to 7200.10 and 7200.11 models.

Thanks for the info. Seems everyone is rushing to 320GB platters on the desktop and 160GB platters in notebooks.

I don't think these are too widespread yet. And IIRC, the 7200.10 had a 250GB single-platter model before the 7200.11 arrived.

BTW, I was reading some of the 7200.11 reviews on Newegg and it seems that Seagate is having some quality control/firmware issues. So I would proceed with caution. Smile

For me, it's that it's half the price of a similar notebook drive, which means I can just RAID 1 them for reliability.(I do this normally as data recovery is thousands of dollars lately) Nothing is cheaper insurance for your main computer than RAID 1.

Anyone bought one of these yet? I've not been able to locate one of the 320GB platter Western Digital drives here in the UK but have found somewhere selling this Seagate one. Unfortunately, there don't appear to be any reviews of this one around just yet.

Ideally, if somebody has compared both, I'd like to hear your views.

I have one, but it has problems, I have to send it back to RMA.
I've plugged the HDD on my system and I have used Hd Tune to test the performance to be able to see the write speed since I didn't had any partition. The read test worked but at the write test didn't start. The HDD disappeared, I have restarted the OS, but the behavior was the same: when I wanted to test him, he was gone. After a few restart I have used SeaTools, whitch showed me some errors and after that I was unable to boot again with the hdd connected, because the system was blocking on detecting the new HDD. So I have no choice but to return the drive.

I have an Asus P5B Deluxe mainboard.

I have attached the read test and the SeaTools error(the 2nd one was taken with an phone camera).

FWIW, the 7200.11 Seagate disks are showing a very high level of failure/dissatisfaction on the Newegg postings.

Yeah but lots of drives do. It's the same for the new WD AAKS 320GB single platter drives. Hard to ever find an HD with all good reviews since most people only review if there's a problem. Then again, a lot of problem reviews is still a lot of bad drives. Confused

I doubt it will be quieter than 320GB WD or Samsung drives, and I wont be able to tell anyway as I will be in a noisy environment, but I can pass judgment compared to the 160GB 7200.10 single platter drive.

Well I have received a new drive and the comportment is the same. I've observed that I can't write on the HDD. I have tried hdtach test with read and write and when the write test started, the application stopped responding and after 1-2 minutes the HDD disappeared.
I then tried SeaTools for Dos and here is a screen capture:

I'll try tonight to change the sata port and data/power cable. Do you think it's a good idea to write an email to Seagate ? Maybe it's an incompatibility with my mainboard.

Regarding the MB compatibility question, I was wondering that myself. I would find it hard - but not impossible - to believe that you would receive a second bad sample. Keep us posted.

I just received one of these drives to use as a games/large programmes drive. However, I won't install it until I receive the e4500 CPU I'm waiting on. Hopefully, this will be before the weekend.

I'm not too concerned about the noise it will make in all honest, as it will be suspended by elastic in my Antec Solo

I have used 6 of these drives, 2 of which have failed. One of the drives failed immediately, one failed within 2 hours of use.

Sounds like it might be worth waiting for a update from seagate (a v2 with new model number would be nice so you know your definitely getting the right one) before getting one. But then with samsung and WD offering same size platters for pretty much the same price, why wait for seagate?

We have not seen a single really quiet Seagate 3.5" drive in the SPCR lab since Barracuda V. I wouldn't install one in any of my PCs. In a server in another room, OK.

Ouch, the negative reviews for this drive outnumber the positives at Newegg. That's not exactly a good sign. : )

Cryoburner, I have the same problems as they do. The HDD keeps disappearing, can't format it etc. Now it's clear for me that it's not an incompatibility problem, it's just BAD QUALITY from Seagate.

Oh my god. Well, i'll try to Samsung HD642JJ or HD250HJ. Apart the differences in performance, size and price, in your opinion what's the more realible?

Today I went with the hdd to a friend and I was able to partition , test him, etc. His system is an K8N (S754). But when I got home, the hdd was not recognized by my system. So it could be however an incompatibility or some settings from bios.

marius7, Hello dude. I have same issue as you and i have same motherboard and same HDD, moreover i changed HDD two times in service-center and changed BIOS firmware and nothing helped me. Everytime i get bad-sectors and disk disappearing. I thinks problem in this stupid motherboard and in it's stupid controller, i really thinking about buying gigabyte and totally forget about stinky asus. Good Luck!

I was recently one of the many on Newegg's site to post a bad review for this drive, blaming the drive itself for what some of you have reported - the drive disappearing or not being recognized properly in the BIOS, causing hangs, failing to format, etc...

I have an Asus M3N-HT deluxe mb (nvidia 780a chipset) on which I was trying to install this drive. Luckily, after all but giving up, I tried the drive on an older nForce 4 board on which it worked perfectly. With the exception of slow access times (~18ms), it is fast. 240MB/s burst and 98 MB/s sustained in HD Tach. The thing is inaudible in a closed case (a case quiet enough to make SPCR readers happy - I am a quiet freak like all of you).

Based on what others have written here, I think there is a compatibility issue between certain drive controllers (Asus ?) and the firmware on these drives. My firmware is SD22. I called Seagate's phone support, which, as you might guess, were totally useless. They actually told me to avoid all 7200.11 drives in favor of another manufacturer! I can't believe they would be willing to completely lose my business like that.

Anyway, an owner of a Crosshair II formula on Newegg's site reports success with the 640 GB version of this drive, so I'm going to give it a try. I'll let you all know if it works.
