I guess this is just another plain vanilla Solo build;
Antec SOLO
Seasonic S12-II 380
Asus M3A78-EM
Athlon X2 5600+ @ 2.99GHz
AC Freezer 64 @ 900RPM
AC 12 PWM fan @ 600RPM
6GB DDR2
WD 500GB
Pioneer DVR-216D
Asus 8600GT 512MB silent
Idle CPU: 34C, Mobo: 41C, GPU: 59C, HD 38C
Load: CPU: 46C, Mobo 42C, GPU: 90C, HD: 38C
Resistors hard wired in the CPU and exhaust fan, PSU left to ramp up on its own.
What a mess
Here's the other side of that "mess".
The finished *shiny* product. (For those that don't know what a Solo looks like )
The loudest thing in the case is by far the PSU fan, at idle I can still hear a cyclic clicking noise. Any suggestions for improvement? The PSU fan ramps up alot under load and exhausts alot of hot air out the back, (I dont have a problem with it ramping however), do you think I should make a duct under the PSU so that the CPU/ GPU heat doesnt rise into the PSU directly? |

Hi,
Very clean build! That Seasonic PSU has the ball bearing Adda fan, right? I like using the GlobalWin NCB fan in the PSU -- are you up for a fan swap?
A duct might help cool the CPU better, or maybe if you ramped up the exhaust fan a little bit faster? The Arctic fan being frameless means it may have a hard time with backpressure? _________________ Sincerely, Neil

Ramping the back fan faster makes for a whooshing noise (happens around 900RPM). If I don't have the back fan at all, my HD jumps over 40C and GPU temps skyrocket even at idle.
I'm not really up for a fan swap right now, for two reasons, 1) The warranty (this was an expensive PSU!) and 2) to take the PSU out means you have to take the motherboard out, and it also means rewiring the hole case .
I'm up for ideas about the ducting though. My impression is though that at full load the PSU's faster spinning fan helps keep the GPU temp under *100C*, and also helps cool the CPU.
BTW, I've completely taken out the front fan filter and frame, and the metal behind the empty 5.25 bays for better air intake (helps a bit with the whooshing). |

the build is so nice and cleanly wired.
why is your desk so dirty? |

Hi,
What speed is the rear exhaust running at now? Can you increase it to ~800RPM and see if that helps the PSU fan stay quieter? _________________ Sincerely, Neil

Hi,
Nice build (Solo powaaaaaa!!!!).
What do you think of those Arctic cooling fans ? _________________ Antec Solo | Enermax Modu82+ 625W (with Scythe quiet PWM 120mm fan) | Evga 750i FTW modded | Intel E7200 @ 3.2GHz | Mini Ninja | Corsair 2x1Go | Gainward 9800GTX+ | Accelero S1 | Intel X25-M (V2) 80Gb w/Windows 7 Ultimate | Samsung 1To (3,5 inch) in SQD | Exhaust fan NF-S12 | GPU fan NF-P12

Vanilla Solo build maybe, but well done and ultra neat. Good job |

Temp 0 is CPU
Temp 1 is mobo/ chipset
Fan 0 is CPU fan
Fan 1 is exhaust fan
Increasing to around 800-900RPM leads to a whooshing noise. I'm not running fanmates (I've hardwired resistors in there so its not easy to change the fan speed).
I was thinking about ducting though, I'd like to have your input on that. If I duct the power supply to the front (so its not affected by the other heat sources in the box), and then perhaps duct the CPU to the back, however the graphics card might heat up due to the PSU fan not ramping up anymore.... not sure how this goes.
I've seen how Dell's and HP OEMs have done CPU cooling using ducts in their setups, basically run a duct through the entire center of the computer straight out to back exhaust, and I was thinking of doing something like that on mine, but again, I don't know what this would do to my already warm video card. (Is 90C passive that high on load?)
I don't have experience with framed fans... lol, only the Tri-Cools, which don't really count anyways. Do you think that having a framed fan would give more suction out of the case? I bought these for its built-in anti vibration (both on the Freezer 64 and the exhaust) and its PWM capabilty (which never worked out ).
Right now most of the noise coming from the box is from the Seasonic PSU, there are two tones, sort of a higher pitched whining (as if a fan is moving too fast), and a lower toned thumping. Both of these aren't that loud, its just evident now that everything else is quiet. |
