Re: Folding@Home Is Now Doing COVID-19
I just completed a new and signed in with the team number. I used to do this back around 2003 but had forgotten all about it.

Re: Seagate's 10TB HDDs
This is why we need SPCR to reactivate. So much has changed over the years (especially fans and PSUs), and HDDs are still relevant today as the vast majority of people can't even come close to affording SSDs anywhere close to the capacities of the HDDs that a lot of people need. Maybe there are qua...

Re: Which cooler for LGA1156 from this reseller?
Turns out to have been a great buy! That system is still going and is now being handed down to my son. I've ordered a Noctua NH-D15S for my new i7-6700K rig. It was expensive too, but I know that these things work and have longevity!

Re: Define S Optimization
An interesting thread. I just built a new PC with a Fractal R5 case and ordered a Noctua NH-D15S cooler for an i7-6700K. Sounds like much can be achieved with fan placement. Thank you for the replies to this thread!

Which PCI-E socket for video card?
I just got my Asus P7P55D and i7-860 today and it works! Three months I've been without a computer, thanks to a vendor who treated me very badly and will never see my business again. This time I had the good sense to test that the system would boot before I spent the time putting it together neatly....

I just spent the last couple of hours reading reviews on here. The Noctua NH-U12P is higher up the list of recommended coolers, but it's £62. The Zipang 2 is more affordable but doesn't mount as securely. It's over £20 cheaper than the Noctua though. I couldn't find much on the Zalman CNPS9900 (ei...

Which cooler for LGA1156 from this reseller?
I'm about to order an i7-860 and Asus P7P55D from my favoured reseller. They have a few HSFs for this platform in stock and I wondered what the SPCR endorsed choice would be. Here's a link to their HSF page for socket 1156 compatible: Kustom PCs Anything there that jumps out as the obvious choice? I...

I'm still computerless. I did a stupid thing. I now know that it was the motherboard that was faulty from the beginning. I waited literally for years for this upgrade, bought RAM, CPU and motherboard and it wouldn't post. I sent the motherboard back, got a refund (it was claimed that the BIOS did no...

What's a good quiet and modular PSU?
I'm after a modular PSU as I have a reasonably low-powered system and do not need all the cables that my current Seasonic SS-550HT has and I'm worried about screwing the motherboard on top of the cables to get them out of the way.
Thanks

Advice on my new components
I posted a while back about my new system. I decided on this following and bought it from Overclockers UK: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor - OEM Asus P5Q Pro Turbo Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard Kingston HyperX 8GB (4x2GB) DDR2 8...

That's me home now. It's a Seasonic 550HT. Does that have the EPS12V? No way of flashing the BIOS if the sytem won't even POST. It seems that I have confirmation that the CPU and motherboard are compatible so I have justification for asking for a refund on my shipping costs for the RMA of the mother...

The supplier said that the BIOS might be too old for the CPU and there was no upgrade that would work. I'm skeptical. My PSU is a Seasonic 550W, so I imagine it is certified. I don't recall the exact model number right now, but it does have some certification stickers on it, something about being gr...

Compatibility question (Asus P5Q Pro Turbo + Q9450)
Can anyone confirm whether the Q9450 CPU is compatable with an Asus P5Q Pro Turbo Intel P45 motherboard? There is a bit of a story behind my question. First of all, I bought a system as documented here: [ Looking for advice on platform ] Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 12MB-cache ...

Kingston SSDNow V-series - review
Having just bought one of these, I am now in a quandary about whether to return it or not. I just found a recent review (posted two days before I write this) which suggests that they are half-decent drives and the best value out there at the moment. tweaktown.com I just wondered if any SPCRers had t...

Help! How to remove heatsink baseplate [Solved!]
I got my new motherboard last week. Rather than doing the sensible thing of testing it, I put the heatsink on. I have a Scythe Ninja and used the supplied LGA775 adapter bolt-through kit. It has a base plate that goes on the underside of the motherboard; it sticks on with 3M sticky foam. I got an RM...

Okay, I'm more or less convinced to return the Kingston drive. OCUK does accept returns and I didn't peel off the shrink wrap. OCUK has a 'this week only' deal on an OCZ Summit. Already tried all those things lodestar. The one thing I haven't yet tried is to clear the CMOS. I called the supplier and he suggested that as well. Just dashed home -- one of the few perks of being self employed! I tested the 8-pin power connector and it made no difference. I then took a working PSU from another computer and got the same result. The green light on the motherboard lights up with both. I didn't actually consider the power lead, t...

I found an image that shows the connectors on the PSU Link to newegg There's a 20+4 pin connector, which fits in only one place on my motherboard. Re: New system won't boot
Heh.. Rule #1 of building a computer - Before spending hours cabling/putting everything into your new case and finding it doesnt work, install the CPU/RAM and see if the thing posts. That way, if it doesn't, you haven't wasted hours both putting it all together and pulling it apart. I too learnt th...

You can all imagine the feeling. You do research, you decide to wait, not enough money to upgrade, wait a while. Finally the day comes, you order your bits then wait for them to arrive. They finally arrive, you set aside an evening of fun building the new system. You spent time doing it as neatly as...
