What AC Silencer did you try? Because I have an ATI Silencer 1 Rev. 2 on my own 9800 Pro and I have to say it's VERY quiet. There is some slight fan noise @ 12V, but undervolt it and it's practically silent.

Ah, I see. Must have missed that. If you're still using Windows 98 (although I really can't imagine why) then I suppose it wouldn't really hurt, its memory management by default is terrible anyway. Can't really screw that up I suppose ;)

Interesting stuff, but how much of that applies to Win98SE? None of it. Windows 9x's memory mangement is a completely different animal. TomZ: As for the arstechnica thread, like I said read DriverGuru's posts. I didn't say "every post in that thread is correct" -- the contrary opinions in that thre...

Disabling the swap file's an option too, if you have enough RAM. Some things might not run without a swap file though (Quake2's the only one I remember outright refusing to run). No, no, no. Please, everyone, educate yourselves here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/ubb.x/a/tpc/f/99609816/m/8290...

^ What they said.

I have a Pentium 4 2.4 myself (paired with 1GB of RAM and a 9800 Pro video card) and I see absolutely no compelling reason to upgrade anytime soon. This computer still runs anything I throw at it just fine, hell, even Black and White 2 runs fine.

Yeah, that's the main reason I would always pick an Arctic Silencer over anything else. It does the only sensible thing: extract the heat out of the case. Plus, I have a dislike for anything Zalman.

This would be a solid choice:

It's powerful enough for your needs, and sleeved (and blue!). I think modular PSU's will be out of your price range; that's a feature typically found on high-end PSU's such as the Antec NeoPower.

So? Fortron makes excellent power supplies, if perhaps not among the quietest. For all those who aren't silence freaks like us, Fortrons are just fine :)

I think the serial power may be better as it provides all the possible necessary voltages (including the 3.3v which doesn't exist on 4-pin molex). Does that even matter? My Samsung Spinpoint P120 only gets its power from +5V and +12V, not from the +3.3V rail. It may be used in the future, but it se...

I'm pretty sure they have. I have an ATI Silencer 1 Rev. 2 on my 9800 Pro and there is no clicking noise at all (I also have a pre-Rev. 2-version and it's terrible in that regard). I'm running it at 7V and it's simply inaudible.

My computer is pretty similar to yours (same case, same CPU, same amount of RAM, one SATA HDD). Incidentally, my own S12-430 is arriving tomorrow now that they are available in The Netherlands as well, and I'll be sure to report my findings back here, as I'm a big fan of the S3 Standby mode!

Yeah, should work just fine. Your CPU and motherboard will draw 6A tops from the 12V1 rail, and 8A on the 12V2 rail should be sufficient for an X800GT + hard drive and optical drive. None of your components are very power hungry :)

I currently have a Freezer 7 in one of my computers, it's whisper quiet at 800rpm and keeps a 3GHz Prescott at about 45 degrees. Not bad at all, and this new version should be even better.

Seasonic available in The Netherlands!

Just a quick note to the Dutch SPCR readers (I'm sure there are a few): to my surprise I discovered that http://www.gistron.com is now selling the Seasonic S12-430 and the S12-500 power supplies! I just ordered the 430 to replace my 350W Power Man supply, which has become the noisiest component in m...

I have installed an ATI Silencer 1 Rev. 2 and the fan is VERY quiet. Even at 12V, the fan itself is barely audible, it's mainly wind noise. The key is not to hook it up to the fan header on the video card (it sometimes sends voltage peaks, which cause the clicking noise some are hearing), but to get...

Will the Scythe Ninja be able to passively cool my P4?

So, with the Scythe Ninja heatsink being all the rage currently, to my surprise I came across a store in this country that has it in stock. I currently have a Pentium 4 2.4c, running at stock voltage. My case (In Win C720) has a Nexus 120mm fan in the back and a Power Man PSU with a 120mm fan, so th...

ATI Silencer 1 experiences?

Hello, A while back I bought an ATI Silencer 1 for my Radeon 9800 Pro. Arctic advertises it as being quiet, so I thought this would be just the thing for me. But after mounting it... it isn't quiet at all. Hell, I think the stock cooler was less noisy, and that's saying something (shitty 40mm fan). ...
