Re: Synology DS212J (NAS)
I own the same one and it sits across the room in an open cabinet under the TV. I can hear it if everything else is off, including the ceiling fan, the windows are closed, and I focus. It really is quiet enough unless you plan to put it on your desk. Mine has been running for nearly 3 years now non-...

Re: Real silence - move your PC to another room!
I do not have an issue with the OP sharing his solution here. Although, I would argue that this was the wrong forum to share it in. This site and forum was designed by and for quiet PC enthusiasts trying to help each other achieve the goal of comfortable and quiet computing. The focus is on making t...

Re: AMD A4/A6 FM1 coolers....what is quiet and cheap?
A6-3500 3 core is what I am looking at. It will not be pushed hard at all. I will not be overclocking it. I am mainly concerned with fan noise at this point. Case for now is a full ATX Silverstone tower. But I would like to go to a smaller case soon. So a lower profile heatsink might be ideal if I w...

AMD A4/A6 FM1 coolers....what is quiet and cheap?
I have not been around here much since my last build. I suppose that is a good thing? It has been quiet and reliable for 6 years or so. Time for an update. What are the current "cream of the crop" coolers for the newer socket FM1 AMD CPUs? I think they might use the same mounting as AM3/3+ so compat...

I ended up mounting the 2 drives on foam on the bottom of the case. Its jerry rigged in there now, and could be prettier, but it works and it is MUCH more quiet than they were in the cage! And temps are idling around 30C. I am going to play with fan speeds over the next days and weeks but it is sile...

Here are some pics of the case and the previous setup. I have since replaced the Phantom 350 (died) with a Nexus 350 (fan died), and now HX520. I have a WD GP 1TB coming tomorrow. System drive is a Seagate 120. I would like to replace it sometime in the future with a 2.5" something or other. http://...

Nexus Disktwin install options
I just received my Disktwins. I have had the drives in the cage for some troubleshooting and testing. Now that everything is in order, I need to soft mount them again. I previously had them sitting on some foam channels I made and secured with some aluminum tape. That worked well, but wasn't very se...

He said he tried the jumper to set the drive to SATA I mode. I just ordered the same drive to use in my system that only supports SATA I. I read somewhere a list of chipsets that were tested by WD to work in this configuration. My board is nForce4 Ultra and it was on the list. So hopefully I can set...

Buffalo Linkstation Mini silent NAS
http://www.buffalotech.com/products/network-storage/linkstation/linkstation-mini/ Looks like a cool little box. RAID 1 or RAID 0....500GB or 1TB. Fanless and uses 2.5" drives for low power use. 10W I think is what they say. Only 1 year warranty....I wish they would sell just the box, and you could p...

I might be in luck. I was about to rip apart my old box and clean it up in preparation for the new stuff, when I decided to give it one last shot. I stripped it down, took out the mobo, dusted it off good, remounted the essentials, cleared the CMOS, and fired it up. So far, so good. I need to do som...

I am actually looking at this now. Seems like a good price/performance package. If its stable and quiet, it might be perfect. You could replace the PSU with a Pico, add a larger HDD....or an external eSATA, and replace the CPU cooler/fan, and have a pretty dang nice little box. Any other reviews fro...

Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H opinions?
This board seems like a real nice one. It has all the connections I could ever need. It has gotten lots of good reviews. I think I am going to order one before the end of the week. Is there any reason not too? My system is mainly used for web/email, and ripping/storing/serving music. It is on 24/7. ...

Well I am salvaging the case, the PSU (if I dont go with the Pico), one of the hard drives, the optical drive, and possibly the fans if they arent worn out. I dont know if I can re-use the XP90 cooler on the AM2 platform...and even if I could, I am not sure it would be the best to try and run passiv...

New system time....
It has been several years since I built my current PC. It currently lies in a grave of dust and unuse since the catastrophic failure it died from. I was out of town, and the PSU fan bit the dust and took out either the motherboard or the CPU. So I left it and have been using the Sony TZ laptop as a ...

What cooler for AMD 4850e 45w?
I am getting ready to replace mobo/CPU/RAM in the tower and would like some opinions on coolers for the CPU. Case is a Silverstone TJ04. I am running Nexus 120 fans front and rear and the corsair HX PSU has a 120 as well. I am looking at HR-01, Mini Ninja, Nexus HC9000, etc. Noise is the top priorit...

Back again. No real news. I had to replace the RAM again...not sure if the first 2 were a bad batch...but all seems well. UPDATE: 1-24-07
Well since the last update (adding a HD and replacing a bad RAM stick), there have been a couple problems. :( My Plextor 716SA bit it. I think I helped it. I use EAC to burn CDs, and when it finishes a project, it ejects and reloads the disc. Well one time, as it ejected, habit set in, and I grabbed...

Thanks for the replies so far. After reading a test of several video cards on Oblivion, it seems that in order to get really good results, I need to step up to the X1900 or 7900 series cards. And these only give good results up to 1280 resolution. So it seems that 1680 just isnt going to happen with...

I need a silent/quiet $200-$250 card for games! Help!
Well, I have started playing games once in a while and the X300 just isnt cutting it. I have a new Acer Ferrari 20.1" LCD and need something that will run it at 1680*1050 for games like BF2 and Oblivion. I was looking at some of the passive options, but they seem to be mid to lower end performing ca...
