FWIW, I'm extremely aware of the term "sampling", but am not up on the latest legalese. It used to be that less than a 2 second sample was OK. I don't know what's currently acceptable though. That's up to the lawyers. It's still <2 seconds...but technically Coldplay didn't sample the phonograph rec...

Once game designers start designing 512MB maps then we'll need that much video memory....but the only game currently that's rumored to need that much is Doom 3, and there are people that are disputing that claim (since Id made it before the game was even released). You're all right, in a couple of y...

(other) news from Computex '05
Computex is a huge show and there's a lot of cool stuff that's being unveiled besides the AOpen mac-mini clone (although that's pretty cool too  ). This thread was started to discuss all the other stuff; info on Computex can be found just about anywhere, but here's a link just to get you start...

flarkit , Welcome to SPCR!! This thread prompted me to do another round of dust cleaning this afternoon, and I noticed that my G4 really didn't have any dust collecting at all. I started thinking to all the other Apples that I use at work, and I realized that Apple must really take that into consid...

edit: heres a tip, have someone test to see if all of your components are TRULY grounded, that helps massively. OR do a ground lift where nothing at all has a ground whatsoever. thats odd I know, but a studio engineer explained it to me when i was getting feedback sorts of buzzes in my equipment an...

Or possibly (I'm not audiophile, so I wouldn't really now but all the noise inside a standard PC can't be good for the music) with an external soundcard? This is the best option for cleaner sound; it's better to have the D/A converters outside of the main box. Both M-Audio and Emu make fairly inexp...

I agree fully. Despite what others have said here, it is analogue, not digital with the inherent fidelity advantage. Ultimately, (almost) all amplifiers must amplify an analog signal and all (all) speakers reproduce sound by transforming an analog/electrical signal into motion. Because analogue doe...

Well, again, I can't confidently say that it's the case, as we don't know any official numbers on those cards. But if my hunch is correct, they'll only draw 10-20W more than current cards, so yes, a 380W should be fine. If you're unsure, though, you could hold off buying the PSU for another month un...

Although no one's published any official numbers yet on G70 or R520, it's likely that they will use around the same amount of juice as current cards do (perhaps slightly more, but not enough to make a serious difference). Even with a strong overclock you shouldn't need more than the S12 430W. I've g...

Only problem is that I expect it to be expensive. I think it'll still be a couple years at least before solid-state storage is a reasonable option for most people. Isn't that the issue, though? By the time this technology is affordable, hard drives will be another two years advanced....and while HD...

Nah, you're smart, really. If you can't hear a difference there sure as hell isn't a reason to shell out the money for an upgrade.
And to everyone else, there's been plenty of Thermaltake bashing here recently. What about SilenX.....

I third the notion for more RAM (a gig should be okay unless you do a lot of Photoshop/Audio Editing). I would look at the Antec SLK3000-B case, you can find that on NewEgg as well for ~$60, much better airflow capabilities. Is there any specific reason you're going with the Hammer core? It is a 130...

A processor that only dissipates 0.9 watts!!!! Yeah, it's 500MHz, but I'm running an old Intel PIII 600MHz machine that can run iTunes and the internet just fine, and that proc dissipates more like 50-60W. I like where AMD is going with this...

PS, that sounds about right. If you go in for it, check out this fan controller, it comes with four 3-pin to 4-pin adapters so that you can dynamically undervolt any fan.
I personally would go for the pctek SMs, but that's just me.

The easy grip 4 pin molex doesn't plug into my 9800 Pro - the grips get in the way. I have to either use the (included with 9800 Pro) extension cable, or replace the easy grip molex with a generic one. I'm not a big fan, either. They seem to get in the way for certain applications (like the 3.5" dr...

Simply opening the casing on an iMac voids the warranty....you don't have to do anything besides unscrew the backing. It is a very proprietary layout, but Apple's always been overly anal about this kind of thing. But then, most "power PC" users probably aren't going to own an iMac anyway, and if the...

I've never used the Zalman stuff, so I couldn't really say. I know I saw a 2-3C drop when I went from the Thermalright paste included with my XP-120 to Silver 5...but I don't know if that was attributed to the paste itself or to user error  .
