it also depends on the type of noise. this technique probably works better at eliminating lower frequency noise. although it did significantly reduce my drives high pitch whining sound... that is, until i replaced my noise PSU. now i can hear it again. i guess i have to stop at some point. i'll buy ...

well i bought a seasonic PSU. much quieter. thanks.

when i put my hand next to the fan, it's just as hot or hotter than my old noisy PSU. i expected it to be cooler since it's more efficient.

thanks.. buying a new power supply is tempting.

so with a PSU that has better efficiency, does that mean my computer uses less watts or my computer's components receive better power? in other words, if i get a more efficient power supply with the same watts, will it use the same amount of energy?

replace power supply fan?

is it possible/recommended to replace the noisy power supply fan? i've never disassembled a power supply that wasn't dead and don't want to mess it up.

Excellent implementation. thanks. I would make one suggestion, however. I would put foam between the screw and the grommet on the underside of the flatbar. A washer would keep the screw from going through the foam. This should provide some extra isolation from the grommet, which would only have min...

i think it turned out very well. the hard drives are virtually inaudible now. i posted a little howto in another thread.

Yet Another Drive Suspension System (part 2)

this is an alternative to m0002a's Yet Another Drive Suspension System modified to fit in common cdrom bays (credit for the idea goes to m0002a). i was having a problem with high pitch noise coming from my hard drives. most of the information i read on this site led me to believe that a hard drive e...

Decoupling helps some, but not much against high pitched whine. This is easy to test by holding the running drive in your hand or put it on something soft on the bottom of the case. For testing this can be anything soft you can find: a sponge from the bathroom (not wet ofcourse); a stack of socks; ...

thanks for the replies. i'm thinking about taking this person's advice (using common foam from home depot with paxmate glued on top). if that doesn't work out, i'll try the wall plate insulating gasket. i'm definitely going to give paxmate a try, despite this review's dismissing it as no good (based...

substitute for Acoustipack foam?

i think mounting foam in my case would reduce the whining noise that the hard drives make, but i'm not willing to dish out $90 on a couple pieces of foam. does anybody know if there is commonly available foam (packaging material?) of the correct density to use as a substitute for Acoustipack?

thanks for explaning. i'm looking into mounting foam on the inside of the case to reduce the high pitch whining noise. do you think a mechanical decoupling technique might help with the whining?

thanks. i would like to put an end to the acoustic (high pitch) noise, not the structure-borne vibrations. this is the only mention of how to get rid of acoustic noise: SmartDrive - This doesn't totally belong here, because it is an enclosure device, not really a vibration dampener, per se. But does...

exact measurements for aluminum hard drive silencing plates?

i'd like to sandwich my hard drive in aluminum plates as described in
this article. are those plates 1/2" thick? could anyone give me some exact measurements?

also, i'd like to be able to mount the drive cdrom drive bay, but the plates in that article look too small. any ideas?

thanks.
