Bigadv program announcement
Just wanted to make sure everyone saw this: "Big Advanced (BA) is an experimental type of Folding@home WUs intended for the most powerful machines in FAH. However, as time goes on, technology advances, and the characteristics associated with the most powerful machines changes. Due to these advances ...

It's not you, Frenchie, it's the WU. The 7504 Run 19s have crapped out for everyone and been flagged as bad. You shouldn't get any more of them.

One thing I forgot to mention, and am too lazy to track down myself: make sure your mobo has enough 4-pin PWM headers for the number of PWM fans you want to use. If it doesn't, but has at least one, I *think* you can use a PWM splitter, but I've never done that, so I can't vouch for its effectivenes...

Have you found it difficult to do modifications to the case? I have someone that will help me but not entirely clear on how much of that stuff he gets into. Most of the machines he builds are used for businesses, doesn't get into gaming machines much. Three builds in, I haven't had any trouble. Kno...

Re: Looking for quiet cooling for Antec p183, advice appreci
I know my new build wont be as quiet as it probably could be but I want to do what I can given the parts I decided to buy. I guess I'm unclear as to whether you're willing to swap parts or not. Sounds like you might be open to some substitutions. Either way, there are some things you can do to help...

Stopped getting bigadv WUs. Is it me?
I recently set up my Windows folding box for bigadv, and initially got six or seven bigadv WUs in a row. Now for the last couple days, I haven't gotten any. Is this normal? Do I need to change anything? My PPD is in a swoon. Thanks!

Re: Looking for quiet cooling for Antec p183, advice appreci
I agree that you're going to want to swap out the stock case fans. I like Scythe Slipstream PWMs, but there are many fans to choose from that will be quieter than the Tricools. I've got a CM Hyper 212+ on a modestly-overclocked i7-2600 (4.2 GHz), and it's not quiet. I'm looking at a Noctua D-14 as a...

Re: 9,000,000!!!!!
I'm 57 frames into a 2684, at about 39 minutes a frame. Would be 30Kish PPD, if Windows Update hadn't knocked it offline for six hours last night. Grr. I'm OC'd to 4.2 GHz, with the GTX560 running too, OC'd to 910 MHz. Temps between 65 and 70C on both the CPU and GPU. If this bigadv WU doesn't make ...

Re: GPU recommendations?
Well, the card's in and folding. Kind of a headache getting it set up. The GPU3 client was refusing to start, throwing a "corestatus = 63". I tried three or four different drivers before I figured out that it was actually an issue with the XP command line window I was opening. Doing a "Run As..." an...

Just an update. After much reading and probably too much thinking, I abandoned both my budget and my fanless requirement and ordered a GTX 560. I'll report back when I get it all set up. Thanks again for your advice and counsel, all.

Re: An alternative to the Noctua NH-C14?
I just did a Sandy Bridge build using a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 with a Scythe PWM Slipstream (bought separately). Different mobo, but it didn't overhang the closest RAM slot, and even if it had, it would still have cleared an installed stick that didn't have a huge heatsink. Might be worth a look.

Re: GPU recommendations?
Is that ~35k ppd all from your i7 ubuntu box? Whatever you do, try to get a card that will take the 7620 GPU units. They're VERY demanding and will push your cooling to the limit, but give me around a 3-5k boost using GPU3 (Fermi). What's the minimum card that will take those? I'm not much of a gam...

Re: GPU recommendations?
No, that's from both boxes. The i7 does a WU about every four hours, and the i5 does one about every 7. Although the i5 just picked up a project 10126 that looks like it's going to take about 17 hours...we'll see what sort of points that's worth.warriorpoet wrote:Is that ~35k ppd all from your i7 ubuntu box?

I've got an original Freezer 64 that I pulled out of a 939/Athlon box I just dismantled. It's six years old and a little dusty, but ran fine. I don't need to make money on it, just happy to send it to someone who will use it. $5 plus shipping from Massachusetts, USA, and it's yours, as is. Probably ...

Re: quiet cooling for i5(maybe OC a little)
I've used Scythe PWM Slipstreams on a couple recent builds and am very happy with them. Controlled from either the BIOS or Speedfan, they slow down nicely (300ish rpm at idle), and are inaudible up to about 900 rpm. I'm using them with a Gelid Tranquillo in one box and a Coolermaster Hyper 212 in an...

GPU recommendations?
Hi Folders, I'm interested in adding a graphics card to my dedicated folding box, in order to do GPU folding while continuing to fold on the CPU. I'm interested to know if that is possible/makes sense, and if so, then what card(s) would be good choices. The box in question is the i7 in my sig. It is...
