What is a CCD in this context? I tried a quick internet search and haven't found a definition yet. It's the photo detector type.

Re: Slit exhaust over GPU in side of case

I can see the images fine in Firefox on my desktop and in Safari on my iphone. I just looked in Chrome and they don't show up. The images are png files. Maybe Chrome doesn't support those. I'll edit the post and replace the images with jpgs. I'm going out of town, so it may be a week. The "slit" I'm...

Re: My AMD experience with Ryzen

I just got my 5950x running a few weeks ago. For graphics, I’m still running on my old tiny R7 360, and I won’t upgrade it until prices are reasonable, which may not be until 2022. I agree that the CPU seems jumpy in regards to temperature spikes. I’m cooling the 5950x with a DH-15 inside a Fractal ...

Re: Cases with mesh fronts better than sound blocking fronts?

Thanks for sharing your input. I think that we agree on a lot. I care zero about a case's maximum cooling ability with stock fans, but I understand this is a legitimate concern for some. The only chart in his review that I find relevant is the noise-normalized chart. I expect to spend some time repl...

Re: Are cases with bays for CD/DVD burners a thing of the past?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably just get an external DVD writer. It's an essential requirement, but it's not something that I'll use day-to-day. I'll put up with a little slowness if it means I get a quieter overall system. An external writer might have some advantages in that I can use it...

Cases with mesh fronts better than sound blocking fronts?

It’s been conventional wisdom that sound-blocking front doors (with solid fronts and side inlets) would result in lower sound levels. However, various studies at GamersNexus show that cases with mesh fronts tend to result in reduced temperatures when fans are adjusted for constant noise (36dBA) acro...

Are cases with bays for CD/DVD burners a thing of the past?

I do video work and I’m looking for a case for my next high-end build. The three cases that I’m considering don’t seem to have a bay for a CD/DVD burner. I didn’t think that I was THAT much of a dinosaur! Will I need to buy an external burner to do this? The three cases I’m considering are: Lian Li ...

WHS vs Windows 7 for NAS/Application server?

Does WHS offer anything that you can’t get with Windows 7 (Professional or Ultimate)? I’m looking at my options for a box that will primarily act as a file server, though it may also act as a server for a video security application. It would seem that Windows 7 might be more flexible. I ended up buying another cheap 43xx series card for $21 (US) so that I could run four monitors. I now only use 3 monitors now that I have larger monitors. The two card system works well, so I haven't tinkered with trying to get the three to work with the single 5750 card. To be clear: I did eventua...

Eyefinity isn't supported in XP, though, it's not necessarily needed for 3 monitors. However, the support for the the third port is extremely shoddy for XP. I also have the powercolor passive HD5750 and I tinkered with 3 monitors for a while and eventually gave up and added another card to the secon...

I use NEC LCD3090WQXi monitors that emit a faint 60 Hz hum, but it's definitely not a high pitched noise. It sounds a lot like a low frequency fan vibration. Even with three of these monitors on one computer and it's not too bad. One seems to be louder than the others, but it could just be the acous...

You can likely do it, and it would likely be quieter than your current situation. However, I would say that your system would be even quieter if you put a slow 120mm fan on a good tower CPU cooler. See this thread ( Passive CPU cooling not necessarily the quietest solution .) Adding a slow CPU fan w...

How fast is your fan spinning with your side panel on and off? It's normal for fans to run slower when you open the case. With an open case, more air is being moved per rotation (more work per rotation), so the RPM must drop if the supplied power is constant. Likewise, the fan will speed up when you...

Re: Cosmos S

Also I think psu positioned on the bottom of the case is a HUGE disadvantage as the heat rises up and heats up my graphics cards, so annoyed about it. That really isn't an issue. Forced convection from the fans greatly overwhelms any thermal convection in a typical computer case. Unless the PSU is ...

Are you using any fan controllers to reduce the fan speed? With that many fans, I'll bet that you can use extremely low fan speeds while still adequately cooling the components. I'll bet that you could run that system with all fans running between 500 and 700 RPM.

---- snip -------- I would argue that: 1. Your case fan(s) would be able to run slower if there is an active fan running on the CPU heat sink. 2. A fan mounted directly on the CPU heat sink will cool the CPU more efficiently than a case fan trying to cool a passively mounted CPU heat sink. The dire...

while a fan on the heatsink will be more effective at cooling the heatsink, it wont be as effective at exhausting the air from the case. given that, there's no real reason to not mount an exhaust fan.. I have a suggestion: You already list the startup voltage, but I'd also like to see the RPM of the free standing fan at the startup voltage. The would give me an estimate of the minimum RPM that could be used as a case fan for most situations.
