Re: Mike's final sign-off
Wow, such a sad day. I've visited this site almost daily for several years and love the rigorous reviews and unique contribution to the hardware scene. It was a breath of fresh air to certain folks who were tired of every overclocker screaming to talk to his friend over his ridiculously loud Delta f...

I think people have found the much bigger Zalman NB47J to not be big enough for passive cooling on an nForce4 board. Yep, you're right about that, if I run it completely passive, it approaches 75deg C. However, the minute I put any undervolted fan near it the temps drop down below what the stock he...

I have an Ultra D and use a Zalman ZM-NB47J for the northbridge. I do have some airflow directed over it though (undervolted 92mm fan). It's WAY cooler than the stock hair-dryer fan/heatsink combo. I would be hesitant to use it in an environment without airflow directed towards it, as it gets extrem...

Unfortunately, I couldn't download your pdf (404 error), but I think I understand your tiered/chambered idea. I wonder though if it would just be making things a bit too complicated having each in a separate chamber. Your components are quite cool and would probably do fine with some directed/ducted...

Yep, I agree with the others, you'll be in pretty good shape with pretty much any quiet, slow moving fan. I have a Yate Loon at about 8 volts and it keeps my 2 HDDs at around 38 Celcius. Out of all of the cases I've worked with I'm tempted to say it has the best HDD airflow out of them all. edit: I ...

Hello, I'm wondering if turning the fan around (so it blows away from the fins) would work? Maybe covering the "hole" at the top (and maybe the bottom) would help? I was wondering the same thing. It seems a bit of cardboard or duct tape over the central gap might convince a bit more air to flow thr...

Re: Ninja backplate (original)
I have the original Scythe Ninja, and I'm having a bit of a problem with the backplate. It's kind of screwed up since I removed it from my previous mobo. The adhesive on the backplate was so strong it was a real battle to remove, and when I finally did, the rubber was all torn. I *have* since insta...

Very nice, too bad the snowman in all of his stylish glory can't power it himself... So what were you planning on doing with the system, just using it for casual web browsing, office, etc? I suppose it would also work quite well as a low-power home server. Although you don't have much in terms of st...

15,000 hour SMART limit on Fujitsu MHN2300AT
I'm posting this merely because I couldn't believe my eyes. I run Ubuntu on an IBM laptop as a home file server (quiet and low power requirements). I decided recently to set up cron job to log the output of the smartctl command which is a very detailed dump of the SMART stats on the hard drive. The ...

Elegant and SIMPLE Network Storage Solution (for dummies)
Hi all, I'm sure most people here are familiar with frequent and painful calls from family members and friends requesting computer tech support. another question- im my motherboards manual it says not to use a power supply less than 300watts, so even if all of my system components use less than 125 watts will this be a problem? Manufacturers often overestimate what the system may need--mostly to compensate for crap power supplies that SAY 5...

Hmmm, not quite a ping. You know, I just realized what it sounds similar to. Do you ever hear anything strange on startup? I've noticed a strange sound recently, but it occurs only on startup (sometimes 5 or 6 times in succession). CPUBurn is a utility that stresses your CPU and will generate the highest temps you're ever likely to see on the processor. This can be good for diagnosing an incorrectly installed heatsink (e.g. your temps are well above what might be expected) or just configuring your fan speeds etc for the worst ...

Is that the Seagate 7200.10? That temp is about right. How do you like that drive so far? anyone? If you go to the Dell Support website you can punch in your Dell ID number and/or just look up your model # and then navigate to the specifications section. After missing out on a cheap new laptop on Black Friday (I guess getting up at 4AM is too late...), I was curious to see what everyone was hoping to get this season. I debated about asking for a complete upgrade (core 2 duo) but thought it might be a bit much to ask considering the family helped wit...
