Re: Fractal Define R3

What CPU cooler are you using? That means a lot more than the case fans. I have R3 and I'm using a single Nexus Silent 12cm @800rpm at the rear of the case. It suffices just fine. I have Intel E6400 @3GHz. Temps are just fine. You don't need 3 case fans. You need a low power CPU and a big heavy heat...

I'd buy the Samsung 830. It is even a bit faster in normal desktop usage and reliability seems to be at least as good as with Intel 520.

Re: Help, can't locate noise driving me cr-a-zy

First of all: you have way too many fans! You don't need gazillion fans. I have overclocked E6400 system and my whole system has 2 fans: one for CPU@1100rpm and one case fan@800rpm. No other fans. First detach all fans expect maybe one case fan and the necessary CPU/GPU/PSU fans. Then it is easier t...

Re: Recommendation for 500-600W PSU

I bought Super Flower which costs a bit more than your average 550W PSU, BUT:

1. It is fanless under 400W.
2. It is modular.

So I get dead silent computer and clean cabling.

Re: Recommendation for 500-600W PSU

I have a X3 440 with an ATI 5770 I ran my system into a PSU calculator (with a ATI5870 incase i upgrade) and it recommended a 520W PSU (assuming 30% degredation which is fair because I'de want to keep my PSU for a long time). Your X3 440 + AMD 5770 consumes maybe 250W under load. That 520W is pure ...

Re: Still have to decide and I can't 550D/R3/Antec Solo

I bought R3 as it was quite cheap, it does everything quite well, no big problems. It is easy to build silent PC with R3. My system now has 2 moving parts: one CPU fan and one case fan. The rest is passively cooled and I use SSD. Radeon 4770 and E6400@2,7GHz stay very cool in heavy load. I can recom...

I have played CS:S with my PVA TFT monitor and it is totally usable. New LED LCDs are equally good. I didn't notice any bad blurring that would ruin the gaming experience. Here is a good example of how a video can be quite useful when doing a subjective comparison of noise output: I don't need a video to tell me if a GPU is passively cooled  And audio samples are only good if the microphone is very good and the speakers/headphones are also very good. I have the modular Golden King Platinum+ 550W.

I is 100% passive under about 400W load so it is completely silent always in my setup - or in most single GPU setups you can imagine. It is a great PSU I can easily recommend.

Btw, this has nothing to do with the topic, why are SSDs so much more expensive than HDDs when they have less material, no moving parts etc. aren't they much easier to manufacture? Is there some specific thing that makes them so expensive? I don't know but I guess: Supply and demand. SDDs are fast ...

Re: Which mobo maker generally has best BIOS fan controls?

Just a heads up. Some manufactures implement most of their fan control in BIOS, and some in applications that run in Windows. This mostly only matters if you are going to be running an OS besides Windows (Linux, BSD, OS X, etc) Very true. I think fan control should be done in BIOS so that it works ...

Re: Super silent graphic cards!

If you want silence, you need a huge heatsink and a slow and big fan. I don't know any stock cooling solutions that does this ...

Just buy a good aftermarket cooler for your GPU and you don't have to worry about the stock cooler noise at all. I bought Accelero S1 Plus for my 4770 and now it is totally silent - passive.

99% of all stock coolers suck, big time. I just bought Accelero S1 Plus. That is a great and very efficient passive cooler. When needed you can attach a 12cm fan and the cooler will handle any GPU.

Re: Which mobo maker generally has best BIOS fan controls?

Intel seems to have quite good controls. I'd check these things: - can the fan headers regulate both PWM and voltage - to which temp sensor they can be linked to - what is the minimum and maximum pulse width/voltage - how many headers I guess Asus and Intel are the best in this respect in Z77 mother...

Re: Seasonic X-Series Power rating vs. Noise

I'd get a PSU that is passive at low loads. The Seasonic X-Series PSU's he is considering are passive (no fan spin) at low loads (below 20% of rated output). For the X-560, that would be no fan spin below 112 watts, which is not quite double the idle load. But the 550W Kingwin won't spin below 400W...

Re: need help choosing case for positive air pressure

I don't know about positive pressure thing but other than that R3 is a great case. The included fans suck - you want to replace them. They made some slightly clicking noise. I now use a single 800RPM Nexus case fan and my computer is very, very quiet.

I'm building a system with an i5 3570 processor, SSD + 5400RPM HDD, and a Radeon 6950. You would have done better with Ivy Bridge system: consumes less power and generates less heat -> less noise. I also think you PSU is greatly overpowered for your needs. Let's say we have a PWM fan Thermalright TY-140. It has a speed range of 900-1350 RPM. Let's assume we use a motherboard which can send duty cycles in range 50%-100% to PWM fan header. What is the minimum RPM I can achieve with this combination? 1150 RPM? The mobo in question is MSI Z77A-GD65. It ha...

Re: tower or top-down cooler in a P183 w/ Ivy Bridge?

Considering this is Silentpcreview I suggest to buy a tower cooler and overclock "just enough". Nobody should worry about the last 1% performance if that makes the CPU 10C hotter. Ivy should overclock easily to 4,0GHz with a good tower cooler like Macho HR-02. Just keep the voltage as low as possibl...
