It's only after I changed all the fans (they are now all truly inaudible) that I noticed the hard disk noise. Before that I was perfectly happy with it. That is the typical mod cycle. This may get me branded as a heretic, but have you considered turning the fans back up? If you were happy with the ...

Sounds like you might have gotten one with a poorly balanced platter. OTOH, you're going from a 2.5" drive that spins at 4200 RPM to a 3.5" drive that spins at 5400 RPM. Still, it ought to be inaudible at 12db, so I think it's a safe bet that your drive is louder than the reviewed sample.

I agree with Niel. If you haven't decoupled the drive yet, that's what you need to do. The SPCR tests reflect a suspended drive for because most silencers will suspend their drives and because the unsuspended noise has as much to do with the case as it does with the drive.

As to how I ended up with that problem : the HDs are 2.5 inches IDE drives so I have to use an adaptor to plug the regular IDE cable (50 pins ?) to the HDs (44 pins ?). The adaptor doesn't have the normal anti-screw-up thing on it so when I plugged the drive back in (yearly case cleanup), I screwed...

I'm not convinced the enterprise/raid versions of the drives are worth the higher cost. I suspect that these drives are often often the same as the consumer versions, but with different firmware and more hype. But I don't run a server farm, so what do I know?

Re: Backup to disk storage in a business environment

Hinting is when you say something other than what you mean in hopes that the person you are talking to will ignore the meaning of what you actually said and take the meaning of what you didn't say, but were thinking, as opposed to the millions of things you didn't say but weren't thinking. Communica...

How often do you back up to disk and to tape, and how critical is that data? Would loosing half a day's worth be a major problem or just a minor annoyance?

Take some deep breaths and relax, friends. We've got nothing to argue about here. It's a busy time of year, and computer errors can make anyone crazy. I think we can get ESTools working, though. JVM, I agree Samsung's instructions could use some work. And I don't understand why their tech would tell...

I'm confused. If you have to reboot from a floppy into DOS for the Hitachi utility, how is that different from the one from Samsung? Samsung's version does come with it's own basic OS, doesn't it? DOS or a stripped down Linux?

CCTL

While poking around the internet, I discovered that Samsung doesn't have a utility to enable CCTL (similar to Seagate's ERC and WD's TLER) on the F1 series. Either the drive has it, because you paid up to get the "RAID class" model, or it doesn't. This makes me wonder if these new F3 drives will ten...

I ran the test with a brand new formatted F3, nothing on it, and also got a few down-spikes. If it is a background program, then it happens even with an empty disk. While I don't fully understand why you're getting them, I've seen enough graphs with downward spikes like that that I doubt it's a sig...

Another theory? Well, WD has a reputation, and reviews, for being faster than Samsung in general, and I think most of the market is looking for speed. The F3 is a new model and may be as f:D ast or possibly faster than the WD 640GB Black, but that is not proven yet in reviews--I have not seen a sin...

Do you have any comment to make on that statement at newegg: Cons: When the hdd head is in action, you can notice the click it makes racing across the platter. Yes. There isn't much detail to go on, but my guess is that the click is just normal seek noise. With the drive hard-mounted to a light alu...

I could not get the speedfan to read hd temp. I found another one for you to try. The thing about RAID 0 (and RAID 1) is that it doesn't make the seeks any faster. In fact, it will usually slow them down slightly. If you're transferring really large files, striping the data across two drives can nearly double the transfer rate. But when you're not moving huge amounts of sequentia...

No, you don't need 1TB to back-up two 500GB in RAID 0. You can use Acronis True Image and it will compress the RAID 0 1TB to the 500GB drive, and then you can restore to your new RAID 0 array, at least that was what I've been told. I think what you were told about was not a compressed backup but a ...

When reading reviews from sites that aren't focused on recording or silencing, keep in mind that to some people "very quiet" means they can hear the drive in the next room with the TV on, but it's not loud enough to blot out the dialog. If you care enough about noise that you found your way here, ac...

The vibration is all transferred to the spindle making the whole array vibrate, along with the casing. Obviously. The other consideration is that the extra platter requires an extra head. The heads move very rapidly, which are also another source of vibration (maybe even larger, given the counterwe...

Nope. If center of mass resides on spindle axis (platters are balanced) even with thousand platters = ZERO vibration. This is why vibration is hit or miss. Of course 4 platter drive has more theoretical potential for vibration as there's more to be misbalanced, but misbalances can also cancel each ...

True. You don't want to keep running for weeks on one drive if the other fails. Personally, I would be inclined to shut down the computer if I could possibly get by until the new drive arrived, and if I did have to keep going, I'd back up anything critical. Even if the drives are not identical, ther...

For RAID 1, writes will be limited by the slowest drive. While two similar drives may perform about the same overall, you'll get the performance of the slowest drive in every situation. In some configurations, differences in read performance could be a problem too. Hence, the ideal is to use identic...
